Duplicate/Copy
What is the difference between duplicating and copying? If I duplicate a layer or slide vs. copying the layer or slide, I see no difference (I know the point) other than variable names changing. But, the changes in the variables appear to be the same if the slide/layer is copied or duplicated. Is there a special case for one over the other?
Hi DavidNowlin-f8a!
Happy to share some insight on the differences between copying and duplicating Storyline content!
Both actions serve similar purposes, but have slightly different workflows, and applications.
- Duplicating: This is typically used when an author wants to create an exact replica of a Layer or Slide within the same project. You can quickly duplicate Layers on the same Slide by selecting them in the Slide Layers panel, then clicking the Duplicate Selected Layer icon.
- Copying: This is more versatile, as it allows authors to copy Layers or Slides from one project to another. You can copy Layers by selecting them, and using Ctrl+C, then paste them into another Slide with Ctrl+V. Similarly, you can copy Slides using Ctrl+C and paste them into a separate project.
Regarding Variable names, both actions should maintain the same Variable references unless manually changed. The choice between duplicating and copying often depend on whether an author needs the content in the same .story file, or across separate projects.
Please let me know if you have any more questions!
