Jurassic Park Course
Hi Heroes,
I have just finished creating a new course using a moving panoramic background to navigate through the course.
http://jordanashportfolio.s3.amazonaws.com/Jurassic%20Park/story.html
This course is based on the famous scene from Jurassic Park 1 where the car is travelling through the dinosaur enclosures and the T-Rex breaks out.
I started by creating the background on the slide which is stretched far beyond the end of the timeline.
I then grouped all the elements of the background together and applied a motion path to the left which is set to loop until the end of the timeline and to have a relative start point.
I then applied spin animations to the wheels of the car and had these loop until the end of the slide as well.
After this I have set the timeline of the slide to be paused whenever the state of the car is not 'down'. This means that whenever the user is not holding their cursor on the car, it will appear as if it has stopped moving. When the user presses down on the car, the timeline will resume and will show the car and background moving again.
In the second half of the course I have continued with the moving panoramic background but I have set this to play automatically. The timeline will pause at four specific points where a question will be displayed. If the user answers this correctly the car motion path away from the T-Rex. But if they answer incorrectly the car will move backwards slightly. If the learner answers incorrectly twice they will be eaten and will have to restart the quiz.
Most of the graphics in this course were put together using basic shapes in PowerPoint, some of these were then turned into gifs to give them a little more character.

Great job Jordan. I have been playing around with this sort of thing. Looks fantastic.

Great work Jordan, really impressive. Makes me eager to learn more!

Thanks Jordan, I was searching for a solution to make a panoramic view, using an rectangle background and think your approach is great.

Jordan - just wanted to add my thanks for sharing your fabulous idea with the articulate community - it's amazing and has really inspired me as I begin a brand new project on health and safety that I was short of inspiration for! I won't pinch your dinosaurs idea but certainly the idea of following a path to escape danger has got my mind working in overdrive! Thank you!

Hey folks, so I have been using this for inspiration to try and create something similar, and have got most of it figured out, the thing I am stuck on it being able to recreate the clickable signs.
I've created the shape to click on, but cannot get it to move at the same speed as the background. The animation path is the same length and the times are all the same. Any guesses where it might be going wrong?

HI Steve. The way it is done is that you create your object (sign or whatever it is with it's different states) and then you group it with the background that you move as one. You don't move the item separately. The nice thing is that it retains it's interactivity and you can move it with the entire background. Richard Hill in his demo explains this idea well but he calls it nested animation (you will have to play the game to get that learning piece). I am not certain that is how Jordan has done but it works well. I will see if I can provide a short demo.

Hi Steve, I had a very similar issue to what you are having. I had grouped the signs to the background but had hotspots on separate motion paths in front of this. Like you I was finding that these hotspots were progressing at a slightly slower speed.
To get around this just involved a lot of trial and error of moving the hotspots starting position until it moved in sync with the sign below.
It sounds like the method that Richard had described should work better though. It was very frustrating having to test the positioning over and over again.

This is really awesome. Thank you for sharing your development process. I want to try and use this for with revisions to create a product line training course.

Thank's guys, I had been trying to useRichard's idea before emailing, but think my issue was I was grouping the HS and then adding them to the background group. Simply putting them in the background group works. I've switched out the vehicle for a walking man.
Such an awesome idea! Well done Jordan, my 3yo daughter loves playing the "dinosaur game" :)

Very nicely done! I'm having trouble getting the music and quiz to play, though? Do you know why this is happening?

Hi Karen,
This could be a bandwidth issue, are you able to do an internet speed test to double check this?
It could also be an issue with the browser, are you on desktop or mobile and which browser are you using?
