lost files- have to download the published version- can I edit it?
Due to a computer failure I have lost the files I used to create an eLearning in Storyline.
I now need to amend the eLearning.
I've downloaded the published version from the LMS the item was put on, I can't seem to find a way to use these files to amend the original- is this possible or do I have to rebuild from scratch?

You would need the original source Storyline file to make any changes. You cannot "reverse-engineer" a published file.

Curses! But frankly what I had a suspicion would be the answer.

Yep, it ain't like it once was. A long time ago, I had a tool with which you could decompile a SWF back to its Flash source file. After Macromedia made fundamental changes to the codebase and released the upgrade to Flash, the tool became useless. This is the same case.

progress is a wonderful thing!

The upside is, your source can't be decompiled by bottom-feeding code monkeys/script kiddies who hang out their shingle but don't have the actual chops to create anything innovative.
The downside is, you can't retrieve something you built, but lost the original source files for.

Which is true Joseph, but given that the elearning I have created is on the Company LMS behind firewalls, the only code-monkeys who could access it will be authorised to do so....

good thought Matthew, I'll ask, but I don't hold out a lot of hope.
