Resume video after exiting course
Has something recently changed in Storyline 360 regarding the saved state of videos? I created a test course back in July with an exit/resume loop, which allowed the student to exit a video partway through and come back to the same place in the video (since you "completed" the video slide before exiting the course). I have this test course published in our LMS (Healthstream) and it works just fine (video screenshot from the LMS attached). However, now the original Storyline course doesn't do that anymore - it takes you back to the beginning of the video. I tried to recreate this on another test course and even tried “Resume Saved State” with no difference, even after putting into the LMS. This is a feature I really like with long videos. Any suggestions?

Hi Eadskill,
If you're still running into trouble with this, and it's not working as Leslie described, I'd like to have our Support Team take a look at your files and pursue some additional troubleshooting! Can you share a copy of the .story file which includes the video by uploading it to us here?

Steve - I want to thank you for sharing your solution here. I was able to implement it using a Moodle LMS and it's working as expected.
And Leslie, thank you for laying out the three scenarios and how they tie together.
While this solution works perfectly as explained, from a user perspective it is somewhat cumbersome. The published file should be able to remember where in the video the person left off, without them having to click a button to "save" their progress. By using Steve's solution we are left without being able to display the time left in a video because if the user pauses with the video controls and closes the window, the video will start at the beginning when they launch the course again.
I don't understand why from Leslie's answer that this is the expected behavior. You would think that if you exit a course on a slide with the video playing that it would resume right where you left off.
"1. Exiting a course on a slide with a video playing and resuming on the same slide, will reset the video. This is the expected behavior."
I think a good user experience would be:
- Launch a course with the video that can start automatically or be started based on user action
- If they are unable to complete the video in one sitting, close the course and have it remember where they left off.
- Allow the video controls so that the time remaining is shown.
- Worse case scenario, force the user to click the pause button before closing the course, but still keep track of where they are in the video.
There are video SCORM wrappers advertised online that have the functionality to remember where a user left off without the need for them to visit a different slide, I would love to see similar functionality from such a robust tool like Storyline 360.
Hi Travis,
Some updated info and clarification on the video playback while inside a course:
If you're using the slide property setting for *When Revisiting* to `Resume saved state`, the correct behavior would be:
• If the video was fully played, it would not restart when returning to a slide.
• If it was partially played, the video would resume from where it had stopped when the user left the slide. If you're using *When Revisiting* is set to `Automatically decide`, Storyline looks at the items on the slide and determines whether or not to resume.
Finally, if you're using the property of `Reset to Initial state` the video will be set to start from the beginning as the rest of the slide will.
If you exit the course entirely, Storyline will return to the slide you left off at, and resume from the beginning of that slide.

Thank you Ashley, great info. I have another question about video behavior for while inside a course. Steve's solution works well for me if you start a video, use a button or hotspot to go to a different slide after pausing the video, and then when you come back it resumes where you left off in the video.
What I'd like to do is allow the user to advance or rewind using the video controls, pause the video with Steve's method, and then when they come back to the slide they would resume to wherever they advanced or rewound to.
Using Steve's example Resume_video_test.story, you can test this behavior if you add video controls to his video, and then when playing it use the controls to fast forward to anywhere, like the 30 second mark. Then use his button to take you to the exit loop slide, click the button on that slide to resume the video, but you won't be taken to the 30 second mark, you'll be taken to wherever the video was before you fast forwarded.
Great question, Travis. When videos are set to play automatically, they are synced to the slide's timeline. Using the video controls, the video becomes unsynced from the slide's timeline.
Could you instead use the player seekbar to scrub the video (and the timeline of the slide)?

Thanks Crystal. I could use the player seekbar to scrub the video and the slide timeline, however it adds a pause button, and I would then lose the functionality of Steve's return to slide solution if the student usesthe player seekbar pause button in place of the pause button taking them to a different slide so that they can resume the video when they return. I haven't found a way to hide the pause button of the player and force them to use a different button. It would be great if there were a trigger to go to another slide when the user pauses the timeline or media, but I don't see that option either. So the seekbar gives the functionality I'd like in one sense, but makes me lose the ability to take advantage of Steve's exit loop.

How would this exit loop Steve created work if you have more than one slide with videos? The way the "resume" button's trigger it set up now is to jump back to a specific slide
- SteveHazeltonCommunity Member
Make a loop for each video. The "resume" feature will bring you back to the last slide visited, so by setting the trigger accordingly you will go back to the corresponding video.

Thanks Steve. I also came across the issue where when clicking resume after exiting the course, the video would restart from the beginning, but the seek bar would be where it left off. Did you ever run into that problem?
- SteveHazeltonCommunity Member
I'm not sure because I never checked to see what the seek bar was doing. The video going back to the beginning was the problem that was out there for a while but finally resolved. I haven't done one of these recently. Hopefully someone from Articulate will jump in and enlighten us.

Hello Bailey, and thanks Steve for stepping in!
Are you on the newest update of Storyline 360? Right now we are on update 31 (Build 3.31.19951.0).
If so, I'm happy to take a look at your file and see what is happening!
You can do so by using the "add attachment" button in this discussion. Or you can share the file privately with our Support Engineers by using this link.

I seem to suffering this issue now. If the user exits the video slide and then returns back, the video plays from the beginning despite setting the page to resume the saved state. My SL360 is fully up to date too.
Oh no, Phil. I'm sorry you're facing this issue!
Since your Storyline 360 version and revisit settings check out, I'd love to help troubleshoot if you're comfortable with sharing your .story file. You can attach it publicly here or share it privately by using this upload link. I'll delete it after taking a thorough look!

Hello,
I'm facing the same issue for Storyline 3. If user exits while watching a video, when resuming, the video restarts, even when "Resumed saved state" is selected for the video page.
Anyone else come across this issue? Can this be fixed for Storyline 3 as well please? All updates are installed for storyline 3 on my machine.

Hi Smita J,
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing this snag!
Since you are on the latest version of Storyline 3, are you able to share your file with me for further troubleshooting? You can share files in this thread, or you're always welcome to share it privately here. I'll let you know my findings and will delete it after having a closer look!
