I am a self-taught Storyline user, and one thing I found helpful when I started was to "map out" or "storyboard" how I wanted my learner to navigate and achieve the learning outcomes. I also found this helpful when determining whether to use layers or to create branching logic. Your description sounds like a "choose your adventure" where branching logic is needed. Branching logic is pretty easy, as you control the programming. There are no complicated formulas.  Another item to consider when using branching logic is how the learner "completes" the activity. If not all learners will not see the same amount of content, create a completion button at the end. Do not use "% of slides" or "# of slides" as the completion requirement - this will save you a headache in the end! I think you will find that if you can imagine it, there is a way to build it in Storyline.
