Sharing custom variables with LMS issue

Hello all, 

I am trying to report custom variables in my course to my LMS for more detailed learning analytics. I have read a lot about using short survey questions and entering variables using triggers, but when I have tried to run it, the inputs usually throw up an error message. It says Invalid Answer - "You must complete the question before submitting", which implies the trigger sequence is wrong, but I have the variable change on timeline start and submission on timeline end (0.5 seconds - I have tried longer time periods), so I am unsure why the variable isn't being changed? Has anyone got experience of making this work? Trigger example below!

    have you added a reference to check that the variable is getting updated?

    So I tried the reference, and when it changed, it submitted as intended, but it didn't on the second question and failed. I have the trigger set up on timeline start to change the variable over, is there any reason why this wouldn't be happening?

    I have realised that the only one of my two test questions were being asked, and the variables were blank, so one of the questions was always transferring a blank value and therefore failing the survey requirements. I have added a default value into the text variable and it now works! Thank you for the nudge in the right direction and apologies for being an idiot!
