Storyline 3 stuck - says "Initializing commands..." - all after the Windows 10 "upgrade

I have had a host of problems after the most recent "forced" Windows 10 upgrade.  My audio driver for my preamp no longer works and now Storyline 3 freezes.  It gets to "Initializing commands...," and then nothing.  Anybody have any advice?  If firing a pistol through the PC is all you have, I've already thought of that, trust me.  After Microsoft threatened this upgrade for weeks (and literally did it when I wasn't looking...), it finally completed the upgrade, completely blew my audio system out of the water and now threatens my us of software as well.  I'd love it if anyone has any ideas about this...

  • I had the same issue, so followed the 'Run as administrator' which solved the problem, however i kept getting a pop up saying Storyline wanted to make changes.....

To fix this, i went back and unchecked the run as administrator and ran the run compatibility checker which seemed to have now solved everything

  • Hi everyone

I had the same problem: "initializing commands..." and then Storyline 3 got stuck. I followed the steps in Crystal's post and I can use Storyline again. However, I can't insert any pictures or videos from my laptop, and every time I close Storyline, I need to use the administrator account again to launch Storyline. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, Liesbeth. Let's see if we can make this easier for you.

It sounds like your normal "user profile" on that machine doesn't have administrator permissions. In this case, make sure that Storyline 3 is installed as administrator (right-clicking the storyline-3.exe file and choosing Run as administrator), and then launch Storyline 3 normally. You can uncheck "Run this program as administrator" from the Compatibility tab so it doesn't require you to login with those credentials every time.

Let me know how that works for you!

I too have this issue after a Windows 10 1809 upgrade.  Do I need to uninstall and reinstall?  I do have the latest patch from March. Help!!!!

  • Sorry you're stuck on the 'Initializing Commands' screen, Carol.

Happy to help! First, let's see if the Run as Administrator steps Crystal recommended help resolve the message on your machine :

End any Storyline processes you have running, do a reboot, and then right-click your Storyline 3 icon on your desktop.

Go to Properties in the dropdown, and then click on the Compatibility tab in that window.  If you are allowed to, check the box to run the program as administrator. Then try to launch Storyline 3 again.

Let us know if you see an improvement after this. Fingers crossed!

Hi Ashley. A new update was once again just released and I'm now having this problem.

I don't have Admin rights to my computer, so I can't run it it administrator mode. I tried the compatibility tester, which tried to change it to WIndows 8, but still no luck. Will it require an reinstall?

  • Hi Bernard,

The latest update for Storyline 3 was made available today (Sept 9th) and was for Update 7. So I'd look at installing and running that update anyway! What version of Windows are you running normally? If you find yourself stuck at any point, let our Support Team know and we can work with you one on one!

    Hi everyone,

I installed the articulate storyline 3 and completed all the activation steps but I cannot open it. Initializing screen appears, but then that screen goes away and nothing opens. I use Windows 10 also. In this situation, what should I do to start it?

  • Hi Gizem and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thanks for reaching out and letting us know that you've run into an issue with your Storyline 3 software.

Would you be able to share a screenshot of what you are seeing?

I'd recommend conducting a repair of your software installation to get back up and running.

  • Hi Allan,

Thanks for popping in to share that the recommended solution helped! I'm not sure this is a temporary fix, but more a helpful tip with navigating different user profile permissions.
