Text to speech speed
Hello Guys, i think Articulate Storyline needs to improve the text to speech features, so that we are able to adjust the speed of the narrator. because all the narrators (voices), are really too fast, and in order to make it some how slower, we have to add punch of commas; which make the sound very annoying but understandable.
It will also be great , to make the narration speed in a slider (from 1 to 10)not drop-down list (slow, medium, fast).
Thanks
Hi, everyone!
I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 83, we've included important fixes and new features!
One of the new features we've included:
- Unlock new possibilities for text-to-speech audio. Use speech synthesis markup language (SSML) to adjust the speaking rate, modify pronunciation, emphasize words, add pauses, and more.
Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.
Please let me know if you need additional help!

If you need additional capability to manipulate speed, pauses, and pronunciation, you can generate your audio with an AWS account and the Amazon Polly console (includes same voices used in Storyline). It works much like the Text to Speech in Storyline, there is just an extra step to export the audio file and insert it into SL. You can switch between Plain Text and SSML which is handy for customizing your audio. See documentation here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/polly/index.html#lang/en_us

Isn't the cost of that rather expensive?

Hi Sherry,
I'm trying to use AWS Polly as per your suggestion.
I have one question though: are close captions available even with imported audio files?

P.S. The tag for slowing down the speaking rate in the AWS Polly Console is <prosody>.

Thanks. But I do not quite understand... What does the "AWC Polly Console <prosody> mean"? Is this something I can add to Storyline 360 to slow down the TTS speed?

Any update on if we are able to adjust the speed of the TTS narrator? Thanks.

Hi there, I am also asking about text to speech but I would like to know if it will be added to Rise at all? Thank you.
Hi, Sally. It looks like Allison is adding you to our feature request for text-to-speech in Rise!

Just spent some time mucking around with the Storyline 360 TST and the following seems to be true. I used Salli's voice, but it looked to be the same on other voices.
It's not perfect, but something to work with. These should immediately follow text. They haven't been tested extensively:
- Comma [,] = 1/4 sec silence (works even if not followed by a space)
- Period [.] = 1/2 sec silence (must be followed by a space)
- Period [.], [Return] = 3/4 sec silence
- Period [.], [Return], [Return] = 5/8 sec silence
- Period [.], [Return], Caret [^], Asterisk [*], Open Bracket [(], [Return] = 1 1/8 sec silence
Anyone come up with any other combinations?
Cheers,
CC

Thank you so much Clint for the cheats!!! I have been using Polly in AWS but it is cumbersome. Really think these codes will be helpful!

Thanks for these tips Clint.

Thank you for these tips. I'd l had tried the carriage returns, but not the caret, asterisk or open bracket.

These are great cheat codes! Thanks for sharing!

I agree - being able to control the speed of the voice would be a great feature. That's one of the biggest reasons I prefer not to use Text to Speech, but have to for development purposes.

Es ist heutzutage ganz normal, die Geschwindigkeit für "Text to Speech" einzustellen.
I agree, Jack.
We are monitoring the user requests for additional features and this conversation is attached.
We will share any updates that we have with you here.

The spacing keys are limited in helpfulness in slowing things down. and if you are trying to have closed captioning for ADA compliance it is a nightmare. And any changes made to the test is a pain to deal with. There needs to be a better way. I would prefer to use the text to speech as then if someone leaves your facility you dont need to rerecord an entire course if one section changes and you want the consistency. This is not really a viable feature as is.
