I'm not sure I fully understand how your project works. You mentioned a "visited" layer. Why are you using a separate layer instead of going back to the base to show the buttons in their visited states?

I'm sorry for the long delay in replying. I've had other projects come up and have had to put my learning on hold for a while. But I'm not back. I've attached the file. I will also be monitoring this board more closely now.
