Storyline 360: Fill Formatting

This user guide covers the fill options on the Format Shape/Format Picture window. (See this user guide for ways to access the formatting window.)

The fill options let you fill shapes, captions, and text boxes with colors, textures, patterns, or pictures.

You can add a fill to an image, but it'll only be visible if the image has a transparent background. Similarly, you can add a fill to a character, but it'll only affect the area behind the character. (If you want to recolor an entire image or character, use the picture formatting options instead.)

Use these options to fill an object:

No Fill

This removes the fill from the object. Anything behind the object will show through, since it has no fill.

Solid Fill

This fills the object with a single color.

Use the Color selector and do any of the following:

  • Click the color you want in the spectrum area. Drag the hue slider to change the dominant color of the spectrum.
  • Use the eyedropper tool to match the color of anything visible on your screen. Just click the eyedropper, then click any color on your screen.
  • Create a custom color by entering the color value in Hex. Click Hex to use Red/Green/Blue (RGB) or Hue/Saturation/Light (HSL) values.
  • Choose from three palette types: theme colors, project colors, or custom palettes, which include the standard colors palette by default, then select a square color swatch below it.

To save your chosen color for easy selection later, click the palette drop-down list, and then select one of your custom palettes or choose New Palette. Then click Add to Palette (+ icon). The color will get added to your custom palette. Click outside the color selector window to close it.

Back on the Format Shape window, drag the Transparency slider or enter a percentage to make the object semi-transparent.

Gradient Fill

This fills the object with a gradient of two or more colors that blend into one another.

Use the Preset colors selector to choose from several ready-made gradients, or use the other fields on the window to create a custom gradient.

Type

Choose Linear, Radial, Rectangular, or Path. (Path means that the path of the gradient follows the perimeter of the object.)

Direction

Use the drop-down to choose one of the preset directions. (This field is grayed out for path gradients.)

Angle

If you're using a linear gradient, this field lets you specify the angle of the gradient.

Gradient Stops

Use a gradient stop for each color in your gradient. You can add and remove gradient stops by clicking Add or Remove.

Set these properties for each gradient stop:

  • Stop position: Drag the slider or enter a percentage to indicate where you want the new color to start.
  • Color: Choose from the colors shown or select More Colors to choose a custom color.
  • Transparency: Drag the slider or enter a percentage.
  • Rotate with shape: Mark this box to keep the gradient aligned to the object’s orientation if the object is rotated.

Picture or Texture Fill

This fills the object with a texture or image.

Use these options to customize the texture or picture fill.

Texture

Use this selector to choose one of the built-in texture choices.

Insert from

If you’d prefer to use an image of your own rather than a built-in texture, click File to browse for the image or click Clipboard to use the current contents of your clipboard.

Tile picture as texture

This affects the way the image or texture gets tiled (repeated) within your object.

If you don’t mark this box, the image will stretch to fill the object. If you do mark this box, multiple copies of the same image will tile to create a texture within the object.

Depending on your choice, you’ll see some additional Tiling Options or Stretch Options below the check box.

Transparency

Drag the slider or enter a percentage.

Rotate with shape

Mark this box to keep the fill aligned to the object’s orientation if the object is rotated.

Pattern Fill

This fills the object with a pattern.

Just choose a pattern from the gallery, then use the Foreground Color and Background Color selectors to change the colors of the pattern. (The color choices are controlled by your theme colors.) If you don’t see the color you want, choose More Colors or Eyedropper to select a custom color.

Slide Background Fill

This fills the selected object with the background of the slide. For help customizing the slide background, see this user guide.
