Storyline 3 lets you add notes to each slide in your course. Use notes as scripts for recording narration, or make them visible in your published output as transcripts, supplemental information, or written instructions.

Opening the Notes Panel

The Notes panel is only accessible in Slide View. If it isn't visible at the bottom of the screen, click the arrow in the lower right corner of the slide stage to open it. Then select the Notes tab.

Adding Notes

To add notes to a slide, just type your text in the Notes panel, or copy and paste text from another source.

Tip: When you import a PowerPoint presentation or another Storyline project that has slide notes, those notes will also be imported into your new project.

Formatting Notes

Format notes just like slide text in Storyline using the font and paragraph options on the Home tab, including:

  • Font face
  • Font size
  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • Font color
  • Bullets
  • Numbering
  • Alignment

Tip: The background color of the Notes panel in Storyline and the default text color for notes match the player colors as they'll appear in your published output. This makes it easier to format notes the way you want. See below for details.

Changing the Default Text Color for Notes

We wanted to make it easier to format notes in your courses, so the default text color for your notes in Storyline now matches the notes color in your published output (as defined in your player colors).

Now you can format your notes in Storyline and see the results before you publish. (And you can still override the default notes color on a slide-by-slide basis using the font color selector on the Storyline ribbon.)

Here's how to change the default text color for notes:

  1. Go to the Home tab on the Storyline ribbon and click Player.
  2. When the player properties open, click Colors & Effects on the ribbon.
  3. Click Show advanced color editing.
  4. From the Edit item drop-down, select Editor >> Text.
  5. Use the Color selector to choose a theme color or standard color. If you don't see the color you want, use the Eyedropper to match a color from anything visible on your screen or click More Colors to choose a custom color.
  6. Click OK to save your player.

Changing the Notes Panel Background Color

We wanted to make it easier to format notes in your courses, so the Notes panel in Storyline has the same background color as the Notes tab in your published output (as defined in your player colors).

Now you can format your notes in Storyline and see the results before you publish.

Here's how to change the notes background color in Storyline:

  1. Go to the Home tab on the Storyline ribbon and click Player.
  2. When the player properties open, click Colors & Effects on the ribbon.
  3. Click Show advanced color editing.
  4. From the Edit item drop-down, select Menu >> Background.
  5. Use the Color selector to choose a theme color or standard color. If you don't see the color you want, use the Eyedropper to match a color from anything visible on your screen or click More Colors to choose a custom color.
  6. Click OK to save your player.

Displaying Notes in Your Published Course

To display notes in your published output, just enable the Notes tab in your course player. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Home tab on the ribbon and click Player.
  2. When the Player Properties window opens, mark the Notes box.
  3. By default, the Notes tab will display in the Sidebar of your published course, but you can use the up and down arrows to move it to the Topbar Left or Topbar Right.
  4. When you're finished, click OK to close Player Properties.

To learn more about customizing the player, see this user guide.
