COVID-19 Training Examples #274: ChallengeRecap

Seven years ago, we started the e-learning challenges to help course designers practice and develop their skills while also building an e-learning portfolio.

Though the challenges are always practical and based on core e-learning skills (even this one), they aren’t usually tied to specific causes or real-world topics.

I think the last topic-specific challenge we did was during the Ebola virus outbreak. The examples you shared were amazing and helped educate all of us on a difficult topic.

With COVID-19, we have another opportunity to help others learn about this virus, how it spreads, and how to stay safe.

COVID-19 E-Learning Examples

We’re already seeing some timely and well-designed COVID-19 examples shared in the community. Below is a list of interactions and mini-courses that Allison curated.

If you shared one of the examples, please re-post in this post’s comments so others can offer feedback.

Understanding COVID-19

Last week, Articulate shared a carefully-researched Rise course on the novel coronavirus. If you’re looking for ideas on how to approach this week’s challenge, you’ll find a lot of great inspiration—and information—in this educational resource.

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to build a short demo or interaction around the coronavirus disease. You don’t have to create a full course. Instead, focus on something short and quick to address one area of the virus.

Here are a few topic ideas to get you started:

  • General information about COVID-19 and the outbreak
  • How does COVID-19 compare with other infectious diseases?
  • Safety tips for healthcare and aid workers
  • Facts vs. myths about COVID-19
  • What are some typical signs and symptoms of infection?
  • How do people become infected with COVID-19?
  • What do Americans (or citizens of your country) need to know?
  • 5 tips for talking to your kids about COVID-19
  • How does COVID-19 affect the human body?
  • COVID-19: Frequently Asked Questions
  • What can I do? Can it be prevented? Is there a vaccine?

Last Week’s Challenge:

Before you build your rapid response demos, check out the scrolling panel examples your fellow challengers shared over the past week:

Wishing you a safe and healthy week, E-Learning Heroes!

New to the E-Learning Challenges?

The weekly e-learning challenges are ongoing opportunities to learn, share, and build your e-learning portfolios. You can jump into any or all of the previous challenges anytime you want. I’ll update the recap posts to include your demos.

Lovely design Rema, I especially liked the hover-over part that describes the symptoms.

Hi Rema, I like the layout and the animation, really nice work. Also, the accessibility of it with the audio describing the visual is great!

I really like the visuals and motion you used in the opening and closing. The color palette is very appealing--for such a nasty virus. :)

Thanks Jodi. I had to find a way to make it more mentally soothing. :-) Just looking at pics of the virus creeps me out. :-)

I left your audio running while I was working. :) It had drama but it was relaxing. I'm writing instructions for software today (which I hate) so your audio took the edge off but made me feel productive too. Agree with Jonathan on the layout--very creative.

Jodi, it happened to me as well! after I tested it in the browser and moved on to other things, music just stayed in the bg for a while, haha. Glad it was of use to dial down the pain of tedious work. Thanks for the feedback, stay safe!

Just liked this over on LinkedIn too. Really dig the asymmetric layout and your choice of fonts.

These are great...I've been using Noun Project for a long time and it's always good to have a lot of resources.

Cool demo Jodi. I love those icons, neat and accurate. Did you create them?

I wish....:) They came from a designer named Larisa from one of my stock services.

Quick one today--this is a little infographic with art by Larisa. To amuse myself I used one of the Pantone 2020 palettes and some music my client rejected yesterday--but I think it works here.

Just an aside for anyone on the West Coast of the US--I drove interstate highway 10 between Phoenix and LA yesterday. I have never seen so many trucks ever--both east and west--and I make this drive at least once a month. Bumper to bumper the entire way. The logistics are mobilized, I think. Stay safe everyone!

Love this! It's super clean and modern but also extremely easy to understand. Nice job!
  • Hello!

Here's a quick one-slide demo which illustrates the reproduction number (R0) of COVID-19

They've just closed the schools here in the UK, so I have my hands full with the kids this week. If I'm not as active in the comments, that'll be why. Stay safe and healthy everyone. I hope this all blows over more quickly than the R0 number would indicate.

Great use of the slider and the audio. Gives it just that little extra. I really liked how you sort of build the tension on continuing the text on the left. Kudo's!

Sometimes a simple job aid or checklist is all we need to do. Thanks for reminding me of this, Sherri, with your elegant PDF.
