How can I record screencast audio if my only inputs are microphone and external file?

Jan 04, 2024

Hi,

Perhaps this is a simple thing and i haven't figured it out.  Not sure what's happening here.

All i'm trying to do is use Replay to record a demo of my storyline course demonstrating its functionality.

I tested if my mic can hear my audio with Replay and signal shows working.

The course has audio

I recorded the demo.  Audio played out my speakers but Replay didn't pick up any audio.  This is a crappy way to record audio recycling it through the laptop mic but I don't see any other way to record audio.

Does Replay not record audio for a screencast?

Should I be using Peek?

Seems like Replay should be able to record audio so, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi Tom,

Yeah I don't get it.  In this recording I'm using the record mic feature.  Mic is selected and working.

While doing another text recording which is what you see on the timeline, at max volume i can hear the audio from the course from my speakers.

I play it back and my housemate was coughing in the other room.  The mic had no problem picking that up.

It seems to be muting my outgoing laptop volume.

When you use Replay do you have any issues hearing a recorded screencast?

Don't know why it's not playing nice today :-(

Hi Bill,

Happy to chime in!

I did a quick test on my end by screen recording myself talking over a video with audio and I can confirm that both the system audio and recorded microphone audio were present in the resulting recording. I've attached the sample Replay 360 project file for your reference.

Each laptop or computer is different, so one possibility might be that your machine's microphone is designed not to pick up system audio when making a recording. For your reference, I was working on a MacBook Pro when I did my test. If recording system audio previously worked for you, try repairing your Replay 360 installation to see if this helps.

OK so not sure how this will help.  I recorded 10 seconds of me playing a slide in preview with audio.  the audio from storyline is coming out the speakers at max volume but can't hear anything.  Then 5 second in I say test test and picks it up no problem.

Maybe this is a windows setting I should be looking for.  Storyline has access to microphone and it's logging Replay using it.

How could something so simple not work - I must be missing something obvious :-/
