Black screen when slides in 'view mode' in Preview or Published.

Sep 13, 2017

I have been working on simulations with storyline 360 for a few months now. I recently wanted to integrate videos with simulations for a more view then try sort of feel.

When I am making simulations I bring slides in through 'Try mode', and that has been working great. For the vid/sims I have to do 'View mode' to get the effect I want. Not so great.

Every time I preview or publish the vid/sim, the screen turns black. You can still see some of the elements I have on the page (including the mouse cursor), but the rest is black (see screen shots below). If I select replay scene while in preview, it works. But that is an extra step people should not have to do.

I inquired with articulate support a couple of weeks ago, they are still working on the issue. I have deadlines that are not being met, so I was hoping someone would have a solution or at least a suggestion? I'm getting a little desperate here.

Hi, everyone!

I have some great news to share! We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 77, we've included important fixes and new features.

One of the enhancements we've included:

  • Storyline 360 now supports screen recordings on primary and secondary monitors with DPI settings over 100%.

Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!

Thanks for sharing your file for testing, Nor!

I used the latest update of Storyline 360 to publish, and then added it as a Storyline block in Rise 360: Here's the course's Share link, and here's a quick snapshot of my test!

There are a few factors at play here:

Let me know if that helps, or if you're testing in another browser. I'm happy to dive deeper!

This was the solution to the same problem. I was using imported videos shot from my cell phone all of them were black screen with audio when published. I applied this solution by adjusting my laptop screen resolution from 1366 x 780, to 1360 x 780, and everything works now.

This is still happening on the latest version of Storyline with a slight variation. All of a sudden, literally and hour ago, my screen capture attempts are black. This is after I stop recording, in the 'Insert slides' dialog. It's been working fine for 2 solid weeks on 15 captures until today.

Hi Mike!

I can see how that would be frustrating! Are you using an external monitor when recording your screen? If so, does it make a difference if you unplug the external monitor when recording?

I'd like to have our Support Engineers look deeper into why this is a frequent issue. Would you mind uploading your file to our team? Here's a secure upload link. We'll let you know when we receive it and share the next steps.

So sorry for the trouble Mike!

Mike Anderson

I am using an external monitor, but it has been working on the same configuration for two weeks (11 recording) until now.

Hi Mike,

We appreciate you working through this one with us!

I see that Ji Yun recently recommended changing the display scaling to 100% or setting the external monitor as the primary and only monitor in use. Let us know if that helps!

One more thing! It looks like you may have replied by email where your contact details came through to the public forum. Feel free to edit it out over here

Hi, I am also having issues when publishing from Storyline (latest version) with an mp3  file on the first slide).  When published to review to insert into a rise module the black screen appears with a play button and then it launches.  I have tried to put another slide before this as a thumbnail, but then it won't autoplay the mp3 (even though the trigger says play when timeline starts) in the second slide.     I can't figure it out.  Any solutions?

Hi, Kelly. I'm happy to troubleshoot this with you!

First, a few clarifying questions to make sure you get the right guidance:

  • Could you share more detail about your experience? Does a black screen appear, is the recording misaligned, or something else?
  • Could you let me know what your display settings are? To find this detail, right-click on your desktop and select Display settings.
