Course relaunching over and over - cmi.core.exit=suspend

May 02, 2023

I am having issues with a number of courses that should only have one attempt (as set in the LMS/SABA), but the learners can completed successfully and unsuccessfully  and the course continues to allow a launch/retake option . With the successful attempts no problem, the failures its an issue. We converted the files to 2004 to allow for more tracking assuming it would help, but have moved back to 1.2 because it has marked failures as completed. I have tried every status configuration in the course (complete, incomplete/pass fail etc.) with no resolve.

I met with SABA support today and they have provided guidance that the  cmi.core.exit = suspend is the issue
The issue here is the "cmi.core.exit = suspend" message - this is what is preventing the class from being completed. The content is telling Saba that the attempt is to be suspended rather than completed. Saba is therefore not marking the class as complete, because it is expecting the learner to resume the content at a later date."

Is there a way to fix the cmi.core.exit status in Articulate Storyline? we need to know when someone fails and not allow them to take the quiz over and over again until they pass. Thanks

Hi Suzanne, and thanks for reaching out!

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. I found a similar discussion that may be helpful:

You may also want to try enabling LMS Debug Mode as my teammate, Justin, recommended in this separate thread. This allows you to take a closer look at the communication that is being sent back and forth between the content and the LMS.

I hope this helps! If you need further assistance, please let us know here or privately in a support case.

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately the debug log did not seem to provide any new information. I did review the driver further to try some other changes that I thought might work, but unfortunately nothing I have tried have changed the result to stop the retake.

In some further research I saw a note for something similar within Camtasia and they had suggested a change within the quiz structure - i searched in Articulate and tried various things and still no change.

Is there potentially a design suggestion that can fix this - it seems to be a common(ish) problem.

Thanks

Joseph Francis

I have an assessment in Saba which is a "one-and-done." It was published out of Storyline as SCORM 1.2, only because Saba has a goofy restriction on the character length on the description (question text) field, which, BTW, SCORM Cloud gracefully handles. Go figure 🙄

Anyway, in Saba, in the Class Details > Activities > Actions > Edit activity details. I have Attempts on Content > Limited To selected and set to 1 in the field (since it's an assessment, I also have the Passing Score field populated). Whether a learner passes or fails, a second attempt will generate an error message from Saba, stating to the effect that attempts have been exhausted.

hi, yes I think I have tried every version once I moved back to 1.2. I've switch between the players (modern and classic) and the player settings including never resume (that also didnt make a difference).

The good news is its recording each as a new enrollment, so we can at least see the number of attempts, but we need to know that people know what they did wrong, not just beat the system by retaking the quiz until they pass.

Thanks for the SABA message - I responded to the other message, its seems at the same time you posted so looks like I responded to it with a different response :)

I have the setting done in SABA as you have noted (I even double checked if I had the consider for overall score - just in case) which is where it has me perplexed, I am using 1.2 (2004 complete when failed is mind boggling) and from everything I can tell it should be working, but no, over and over again I can take the courses - we have 20 of these "one and done" and none are one and done-ing

I  am wondering if its time to concede...

You may need your admin to go into Admin > System > Configure System > Services and adjust settings, including  "attempt" and "completion" settings. For example, I have Consider launch as an attempt, rather than Consider completion as an attempt. There are probably other settings I'm missing; that's when I turn to the Saba Online Community.

Thanks again for the suggestion - I checked this and we had it set as completion for the attempt.

According to SABA the issue is with the course/SCORM package and its instructions to the LMS, but there doesnt seem to be a way around suspend even when complete. Its almost like an 11 question quiz is too heavy, which makes no sense, but its the only other variable that seems to come to mind after all the tests.

I tried CMi5 yesterday (Saba does not have a xApi option) and still the same issue.
