Fill-in-the-Blank Correct Answers Not Working

Jan 13, 2022

I have created quizzes using Storyline 360 for a course on Canvas. The correct answers for two fill-in-the -blank questions are not being recognized. These questions work when previewing on Storyline or on Review 360; however, now that these quizzes are published on Canvas, students are not able to get their correct answers accepted and keep getting an incorrect response. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about fixing this problem?

Hi Isabel, have you tried publishing your project and uploading and testing in Scormcloud? If it works there, I'd be getting onto the Canvas administrator to see if there is a setting in the LMS that needs tweaking.

I'm actually having one user report this same issue and I'm having extra trouble pinpointing the issue because I don't have access to the original .story file. I finally had the user send me the Results.html file generated at the end of the training and, sure enough, for the fill-in-the-blank questions, the "Student Answer" and "Correct Answer" columns match exactly, yet the "Result" column states "Incorrect." Example attached.

I'm trying my best to get the .story file from the developer who published the course before my time here, but who knows.

Multiple other users have successfully completed the quiz without this issue, but it keeps happening to this individual.

I think at least part of my problem is the slide properties on the fill-in-the-blank question slides. According to this forum post, the setting should either be "Automatically decide" or "Resume saved state," but NOT "Reset to initial state" for question slides. This SHOULD only impact the state of the review slide(s), but perhaps for some reason it's impacting the score, in my case. I'm still trying to track down the original .story file to troubleshoot it.

In my case, it's likely that this problem only occurs if the user completes the quiz and then reviews or retries it. That gives me mixed results in terms of the feedback listed during quiz review, the output of the "Print Results" report, and the score assigned in Canvas.

So, it might be worth ensuring that your slide properties are correct for the questions and try it again. It's possible this isn't the exact issue that your users are having, but I wanted to share what I've found so far.

Hi, Mark.

Since this is only happening to one user, and it's hard to tell from the report, is it possible that the user added an extra space either before or after the word?

If you find the .story file and would like our help investigating, please reach out through a support case, and we're happy to troubleshoot with you!

I asked them about a space before and/or after and they insist they did not (and it didn't translate over into the report if they did). I suspect it has to do with the revisit handling on the question slide properties, but finding out where the .story is proves to be challenging. If I ever track it down and need help, I'll definitely submit a case. Thanks!
