Grading essay questions when exporting SCORM to Moodle Workplace LMS

Hi everyone. I've been searching the discussion thread for an answer to a question I have re: the use of essay and short answer questions for summative assessment of learners but can't find an answer, hence looking for help!

We currently use a dedicated assessment platform but are exploring assessment built in Storyline to be hosted on our Moodle Workplace LMS. The assessment will have different question types to include a number of auto graded questions (MCQ / Drag and Drop, Matching etc.) and also some essay and short answer questions that will be graded by a human assessor. The scores for the auto-graded and human assessor graded elements will then be combined to provide an overall grade with a minimum pass mark (say 70%). Obviously, the essay / short answer will not have a grade assigned until a human assessor has reviewed and graded the submitted work.

Questions are:

  1. Once the SCORM is in the LMS / assigned to a learner, with a learner having completed the assessment, how would a human assessor grade the learners essay and short answer questions? Is this a manual process from within the grade book of the LMS? For example, download the responses and manually amend the grade book accordingly?
  2. I've seen examples of others use of essay questions where the learner could type anything unrelated to the essay question and when they click submit, it shows a green tick and '...congratulations, you've passed!' - despite no one having ever reviewed the submission. Is there a way to hold off such a statement until the human assessor has graded it? I think not but thought I'd ask...
  3. Should we consider splitting these types of questions apart in (say) two separate SCORM files / assessment - one auto graded using binary question style and a second human graded for essay and short answer questions?

Apologies for the long post but I'm wondering if this is even the route to take or whether we go back to our dedicated assessment platform (which is becoming increasingly frustrating to manage).

I suggest that you make it obvious to the user that there are 2 parts to the assessment, and that passing the auto-Graded question slides doesn't mean they're done. So I'd keep those questions together. Include a Quiz Results slide to score them and to send the score to the LMS) 

Then use Survey question slides for the short-answer/essay questions. You'll need to include the Survey question slides in the Results slide to send the responses to the LMS. 

You'll then have to pull the Survey data from the LMS and have those responses graded manually. How you indicate that the user passed the overall assessment depends on how your LMS works. Since passing a graded quiz = successful completion, it might be best to put the Survey part in a separate SCORM package. Then work with your LMS folks re: the process for marking the item as successfully completed or not.
