I'm happy to share that we have released a new update for Storyline 360 (Build 3.76.30446.0).
In this update, we have implemented a fix for:
- Timeline preview buttons weren't always clickable.
As a first step, I recommend updating Storyline 360 to the latest version. Here's how:

Glad to hear it, Merritt! That way you can fully take advantage of Storyline 3. I'll keep you posted here once we have more info on a fix for this issue.
I am having this issue as well with 360. It's very frustrating and time consuming. I hope there is a fix soon.

5 years on....and this has not yet been resolved, ( Version SL3 7:3.720003.0) This happened to me while using SL1, SL2 and SL3, the only way out of this is to save, exit and re-open...this is a frustrating time waster for me.

That's great, but what about the numerous Storyline 3 users (including myself) who also reported this issue?

We're continuing to support Storyline 3 with bug fixes periodically. Our process for updating Storyline 3 is different than it is for Storyline 360, so they won't be in sync. We do occasionally release fixes between updates, but that can introduce risks, so we undertake that only in limited circumstances.

I'm looking for this bug to be fixed, too. Thanks for keeping the conversation current.
Obviously not fixed yet. I am experiencing the same issue. It just came out of nowhere as I was working on a file, I was working on one slide and when moving tro selecting another slide, suddenly the play button is greyed out.
Any real solution in the horizon to this issue?

This is still an issue. I'm on Storyline 360, I update every time I'm notified, but it's not fixed. I've tried all the solutions listed. This time the only thing that worked was shutting down all the programs on my computer and restarting the computer. This has driven me crazy for years. Just in case another program could be interfering, I have the following programs running on my computer at the same time - Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus - including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams.

I'm sorry this is affecting your workflow! It sounds like you're using the latest version of Storyline 360, Storyline 360 (Build 3.49.24347.0), and the only thing that has worked is closing all programs and restarting the computer.
Is this happening with all projects or a specific project? I want our Support Engineers to step in to offer their expertise. You can connect with a Support Engineer to start troubleshooting. I'll keep an eye on your case to see how it progresses!
The issue seems to be random. I will make notes as it happens about what is open, what is in the project, etc. Maybe that will lead to a clue as what the issue is. I'll keep my eye on this thread to see if someone else has any "hints" as to what the issue might be.

Was there any resolution to this or this still a known bug? It happens to me all the time in Storyline360 and is quite frustrating. Lately moving to another slide to make the buttons reappear hasn't been working like it used to.

My teammate, Leslie, shared earlier in this thread that we released a fix for the bug where the Timeline preview buttons become disabled while working on a file. However, it sounds like you're still running into this bug. We are now on Storyline 360 (Build 3.50.24668.0). Which version of Storyline 360 are you using?

This issue still happens.
And its super-annoying.
Greyed-out timeline playback buttons.
The spacebar still works to preview, but the playback buttons will just randomly grey out and (eventually un-Grey).
For a while I thought it was perhaps a background process pre-rendering or cache-ing the timeline...but after 2 years of experiencing this.....there's no logic to it that I can see.
Anyone?
