Publishing to Video and Closed Captioning or Subtitles

Aug 22, 2018

I am publishing a series of videos using Storyline 360 and I have been asked to have closed captioning on the videos.  I was able to take from my notes section and add captioning to each slide and when I play the slides I can click on the CC icon to view the words, however, when I publish the course as a video the closed captioning does NOT appear on the screen.

How do I publish a complete course as a video and have closed captioning play on the video?

Hi, everyone!

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 73, we’ve included important fixes and new features!

One new feature we’ve included:

Boost video accessibility by including closed captions when publishing projects as MP4 video files.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!

Hi Leslie,
Thanks for responding but I really need to know if Articulate will fix this or not. I have been patient and waiting for years now and I get the feeling that Articulate has no intention fixing it. If it will be fixed, Articulate should by now be able to give a preliminary date. If it won't be fixed, you must be honest and let me know so I can look for an alternative eLearning solution. Sorry for being outspoken about this but it puts me and my clients into trouble.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the follow-up. As Becca and Leslie mentioned, we're in the planning stages of adding this feature to Storyline 360, so there isn't a preliminary date set.

To set expectation, it's unlikely to be implemented in the next few updates. I'm sorry if that puts you and you clients in a bind, but I did want to share that so that you can make the best decision going forward.

Hi everyone!  Was this feature added to Storyline 360?

I am working on a Storyline that has closed captions and when I publish to video, closed captioning won't play.  Also, the Player.DisplayCaptions variable set to true (as Michael mentioned earlier) is not working.  Is there another workaround?

Help! Thanks!

Over the past months of trying to get this to work, I have implemented a work around.  I have installed the captions trigger as suggested by a previous community member and then have published my Storyline 360 to Review 360 and uploaded to my Rise course as a Storyline block instead of a video.

Hello.  Wanting to keep this on someone's radar, but it doesn't seem to be getting far.  Can someone know how we can seriously request this as a feature.  It doesn't seem that customers asking through this type of forum is really helping, sadly.  I would think after the 4 year mark Articulate would see a need to add this feature.  Can someone from Articulate tell us how to bump this up through the correct channels?

Eric Santos

Hi Natalie,

I can confirm that when publishing for video, closed captions are not included since there are no player elements included. Rest assured that we are already monitoring an open feature request for this; I've added your voice to it.

This request is on our radar but has yet to make it to our feature roadmap. You are in the right place, and we'll surely let you know if anything changes!

Hi Yuvaraj,

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes! I understand you'd like to know if closed captions can be included in projects that are being published to video. I'm happy to report that you can do that in Storyline 360! Here's some more information about this feature. If you are not able to utilize this feature please let us know here or open a support case with our support engineers.

Thanks for reaching out!
