Publishing to Video and Closed Captioning or Subtitles

I am publishing a series of videos using Storyline 360 and I have been asked to have closed captioning on the videos. I was able to take from my notes section and add captioning to each slide and when I play the slides I can click on the CC icon to view the words, however, when I publish the course as a video the closed captioning does NOT appear on the screen.

How do I publish a complete course as a video and have closed captioning play on the video?

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 73, we’ve included important fixes and new features!

One new feature we’ve included:

Boost video accessibility by including closed captions when publishing projects as MP4 video files.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Just to be sure I understand, closed captioning will automatically be done for videos if the following is true.

1- we have 360

2- the text has been imported into the course, meaning we don't have to add the CC to the audio manually, word by word, anymore?

Thanks for reaching out! Yes, if you are using Storyline 360 Build 3.73.29831.0 or newer and add captions to audio tracks and videos then the closed captions will be automatically done when publishing to video. Here's an article with more about adding Closed Captions for Video Projects.

Hi,

I have published a SL360 file to Video and opened in the same folder as the .vtt file but the CC are not displaying. I am using windows media player to open the video and the controls are set to display CC as default. Any help appreciated.

Hello Jennie,

I'm sorry you've hit this snag regarding viewing captions in your published Storyline video; I'm happy to help! The legacy version of Windows Media Player does not support subtitles. If you're using Windows' default Media player, you can enable the captions in your published video by clicking the 'Languages and subtitles' button and selecting the corresponding subtitle file, as shown here.

Thank you for the reply.

I have both files in the same location, the MP4 opens with windows media player (default player) and I have the settings 'on if available' but still no CC. I think we might be using the legacy version of Windows Media Player.

I can open the MP4 in VLC and re save (adding the .vtt file) which works in VLC but the re saved MP4 file still does not display the CC when re opened with the default player, so there is no point sharing it around the organisation as no one will be able to see the CC.

Is there a way I can check what windows media player we are running other than asking our ICT?

This is our version. My other thought is we are using the right version but I may need ICT to switch something on?

Hi Jennie!

Thanks for the reply and the screenshot! It seems you're using Windows Media Player Legacy based on the icon in your image. My version is a bit newer than yours and it is already tagged as 'Legacy.'

Try using the Media Player app instead, which should support closed captions.
