Resume state on a slide that only has a video on it

Jan 29, 2016

Hi All

I have a very short course that in essence has a intro slide, a slide with a video that automatically starts with the slide timeline and a closing slide.

I am experiencing an issue with the resume saved state for the slide with the video on it. We want the slide to resume at the point within the video where the person exited - hence the resume saved state. However when you resume it is restarting the video rather than going to the point on the video timeline where they exited the course.

Any ideas on what i might be doing wrong or what else I can try?

Thanks

Leanne

Thanks Allen! I took a look and uploaded that to Review from Storyline 360 Update 14, can you take a look at it here?

I tested it a few different times, and although in your video I saw a brief flash of the starting image it still did return me to where I left off:

I tested it in Chrome for Windows, so let me know how it's behaving for you!

Hi Allen,

I'm stumped then - perhaps it's a browser or Windows setting to restart always?

BJ,

Storyline 3 Update 3 is available now and was released March 6, which makes it in line with Storyline 360 Update 13. The next update to Storyline 3 will bring it back in alignment with Storyline 360's fixes as well.

Hello,

Here I was all ready to eat humble pie when I discovered I had the slide's revisiting setting on Automatically Decide. I changed it to Resume saved state and tested again. It then worked as Ashley's version did on Articulate Review. However, on my LMS it had inconsistent results. I've attached a screen vid. Sorry it's so long.

Thanks again,

Hi Allan,

Is that how the program will open for users as well, in this frame, or do they see it in a standalone browser window?

Also, it looks like it's resuming (mostly to the right spot or a second or two off) but that you're not able to use the Rewind button? That's a bit different than what I had been testing. If you're using a rewind button and have the slide set to resume to the saved state - that'll actually prevent the slide from rewinding. That's by design here.

@Ashley -- I feel the need to chime back into this conversation thread -- it would seemed there are several issues in play and the conversation is moving away from why the same source file published by two different people (you and me) using the same SL3 V3 behaves differently (as seen in Scorm Cloud)? That is to say -- when you published it using SL3 V3 and uploaded to Scorm Cloud the video would resume at the proper point whereas when I published the same source file using the same version (and build) of SL3 V3 and testing in in the Scorm Cloud would not resume.

Hi BJ,

This has been a really tricky one. The only things I don't think we checked were *where* you were publishing, such as publishing locally first and then uploading to SCORM Cloud and if you'd done a repair of Storyline just in case that fixes it up.

I can't think of any other ways in which we could be publishing differently from the same version and using the same file. I'm also on Windows 10 in case that's something we have different?

@Ashley,

I published the file locally (always) using the lastest SL3 build (SL3  V3 (3.3.15007.0)).  Zipped the file and uploaded it to SCORM cloud. There were never any issuess over the course of loading the file to publishing it for SCORM; thus, no repair was involved.  It would also seemed we are both on the same Windows 10, mine is the enterprised version if that makes any difference.

Can you send me the published files,  that you generated from the sample source I provided, which you had uploaded to SCORM cloud?  I think I will take a stab at comparing the two sets of published files.

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for sharing your file. It looks like you included the Zipped output here, and I'd need to take a look at your .story file (the file prior to publishing) to take a look at all your settings. I did upload it to SCORM Cloud as well, but without knowing where the video is, I'm not sure how long to wait.  I did listen to the intro audio on the third slide and closed out and was able to resume, so let me know how far I'd have to advance through the course for your videos.

Hi Ashley,

the video is on slide 3.  It does start where you left on a slide but we need it to start where it left on a video, is that possible?   Every time i resume on the 3rd slide, its the beginning of the video and not where i left off.   When you said it listen to and was able to resume? did it resume where you left off on the video or back to the beginning of the 3rd slide?

Thank you.

Thanks for those details, Nancy.

When I tested your course and exited on slide 3, I found that the video replayed from the beginning when I resumed the course. Can you tell me a little more about your set-up?

  • What version of Storyline are you using?
  • What revisiting behavior setting are you using on slide 3?
  • Would you mind sharing the original (unpublished) file with us by clicking here?

Thanks so much, Nancy! I consulted with my team on this one, and I got some clarification on the expected resume behavior.

When a learner exits a slide that has a video on it, the default resume behavior is that the slide will reset to the beginning of the video. The only way to save the progress is by going to the next slide.

I know you don't want to force your learners to completely restart the video, so I found a workaround that should help! Take a look at this tutorial by my colleague, Mike Enders.

I have read through this thread and I am having the same issue.  I have tested in my LMS and on the SCORM Cloud.  I am using SL360.  I need to have the video within my course resume at the point the user exits the training.  However, it is restarting.  I get the same results in SCORM Cloud too.  I have the settings on prompt to resume for the player properties and I have the slide set to resume saved state.  Still no luck.  I am looking for a resolution other than having to break the video into small snippets and putting it on several slides.  Captivate offers the ability to import a video and have it evenly distributed across slides automatically without having to break it into small chunks.  Hoping SL360 can offer the same option.
