Resuming with restricted navigation

Feb 01, 2017

Hello everybody,

This was done in Storyline 360.

I have a course where the navigation restriction is set to 'restricted'.

I've set the resume option to 'Always resume'

I have published the course, launched it, viewed several pages and closed it.

When I launch the course again, I do resume on the page where I closed the course.

However my problem is the following, when I open the menu it does not let me jump to slides from scenes that I previously visited. Which I would expect to be the behavior when choosing 'restricted'.

I've tested this in our LMS and ScormCloud with the same results.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks in advance,

MickyS

Hi there Micky,

Thanks for sharing those details here. Did you happen to publish with HTML5 only or HTML5/Flash fallback? I created a new file using your specific set-up, and I was unable to click on previously viewed slides in the Menu when I viewed the content with HTML5, but it worked as expected in Flash. You can use those links to test the functionality on your end.

I'm really glad you brought this to our attention, as I don't see that it's been otherwise reported to our QA team.  I'm going to give them this information so that they can investigate if there's a fix.  We'll be sure to keep you posted in this discussion with any information we can share on it!

Do any of these new bugs/issues that are appearing just this year have anything to do with the responsive player that is new with SL360.  I'm having so much trouble with a long list of things that were not an issue in past SL2 projects.

I'm having the same issue, I have it set to Flash with HTML fallback.  I have used this a lot to restrict users the first time and resume the last visited slide with the ability to navigate backwards with the menu.

Will Articulate ever provide a timeline for any bug fixes?  I've been through 30+ threads and there are a lot of bugs but the Staff always replies that there is not a timeframe to offer.

I have 300+ SL360 files that all have 2-3 slides, so if I knew that there would be a fix (say in a month), then I might wait to open, workaround, and publish all of the files that would take over 50 hours - with the need to re-upload to the LMS.

Here is an image showing that I'm on the last slide and it's dimmed, but the bright white text in the menu shows that these look like they have never been visited.  They also can not be clicked with anything happening.

Hi Kyle! I just responded to a similar comment you posted over here,  so I wanted to link that for anyone following along. I appreciate you letting us know when you run into a roadblock, and if we determine that it is in fact a software bug, here's how we tackle it.

I hear your frustration with the issues you've run into with Storyline 360, and I understand our development process and lack of timelines makes it that much more complicated for you to know what's coming. We are continuing to refine a product and the new features/fixes right up until the moment it's ready to go live. This also means that the timing of things like the release date is a bit more fluid until the team feels confident that everything has been locked up and ready to go.

I don't know if it is helpful, but there were issues from 3 years ago, where the "Always resume" with "restricted Menu navigation" was not working, but the "Prompt to Resume" with Restricted navigation was working.

Maybe this is a similar or same bug that has come back from the earlier versions of Storyline.

I hope the software fix would have been documented for a quick and easy fix.

The issue back then seemed to be one where a user just didn't go to the same slide, instead of our recent issue where they go to the same slide, but then can't go to the previous viewed slides.

Hi all,

Great news!  We just released another update for Articulate 360, and included a few important fixes that you'll see in the release notes here.

The item you'll be interested in is how learners couldn't revisit slides they already viewed after resuming an HTML5 course with restricted navigation.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.

Please let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.

Hi Ashley,

I published as a SCORM package with the menu set to restricted and then uploaded it to Moodle, but I still get the same issue that was initially mentioned above, which is that when the user revisits the course, he/she cannot go to any previously viewed slides.

Is this still an issue for SCORM packages, or do you think it might have something to do with the configuration in Moodle?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Trevor,

What version of Storyline are you using? If you're on Storyline 360 did you install the latest update mentioned above? Did you check that the new copy of your course was being access vs. a cached copy?  Easiest way to confirm is to test the link in an incognito or private browsing window.

If it's still not working correctly in Moodle, I'd also want to see how it works in SCORM Cloud. It's an industry standard for LMS testing, and you can use the steps in the article here to walk through testing.

Let me know how it works at SCORM Cloud or if it was just the older copy you were viewing!

Hi Erich, I have good news for you! We enhanced the restricted navigation feature in Update 7, and we included a fix for the issue with accessing previously viewed slides from the menu.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for each application. Details here.

Please let me know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.

I was reading this post with interest because we use Articulate Studio 360 frequently. It has the issue where restricted navigation leads to viewed Engage and QuizMaker files being marked as not viewed in the menu when you exit a course and then resume where you left off. Was hoping that might get fixed soon. I have a client that uses a lot of courses with restricted navigation.

Hello Alyssa,

Can you please let us know if there is any update on the issue noted above? We are experiencing this issue when we run courses (created and published as Flash/HTML5 packages using Storyline 360) on Chrome. The menu works fine on the IE browser but behaves differently when we launch and then re-launch the course using Chrome. Is there a fix available for this from Articulate?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Manjari,

The issue within Storyline 360 where you could not revisit previously viewed slides when the course was resumed if the navigation is set to "Restricted" has been fixed. If you're still running into that in Storyline, can you let me know what version you're using? The latest is Storyline 360, build 3.20.16814.0

The issue Brian mentioned was only for Studio 360 and is still open with our team.
