Timeline lagging when editing/viewing

Hello all. I have this issue in Storyline where the time line play head doesn't seem to align to the correct place in the time line when I play the slide from the timeline when editing, if that makes sense. I have had quite a bit of exposure to video editing with various packages and when editing you can play a section, adjust an asset and then move the playhead back again to re-play that section to ensure the assets are playing in the correct order or their time is correct, with no distortion in timing. It seems that when I do this though, the play head plays well ahead of what I am watching on the screen. It seems to get worse the longer I try to get it right. So when I re-adjust, it actually places things out even worse and it just seems to multiply. Something that should take 30 sec's is taking me hours.

I had SL1 intially and used a work computer and thought it was the RAM. I assessed it and it was fine. CPU, well it went to 100% when meeting with zoom effects, of which I have heaps in the slide/project. The project is a screen recording for using software. I now have another laptop and SL1 seemed to work ok but I just upgraded to SL2 thinking this would occur, but it does and now as bad as before. I have attached new computer specs that are similar to the previous computer.

I could have had this finished ages ago if I used seperate screen recording and then video editing software, but I want to get used to SL as I can see the benefits if it worked as it should. I'll find it hard for work to up spec machines in the current work climate and I wouldn't get this on the other software, so there must be a reason other than the machine. HELP...

Hi Shaun,

It sounds like you're describing an issue similar to the one in this thread, where using the timeline scrubbing effect to go to particular parts of the slide is much slower and doesn't show the actual slide point in SL2 as detailed in that thread. It was an issue reported to our QA team earlier this fall, and I don't yet have any updates to share. If that matches the issue you're describing I'll add this thread to the existing report so that our team is aware of another user being impacted and so that I can provide any additional updates here.

If I'm misunderstanding what you're describing, could you share a bit more information or even we're happy to take a look at the .story file to see if we can replicate the behavior.

Thanks for getting back to me Ashley. This thread is similar to the issue I have. I had it on both my computers and experienced it in both SL1&2. The movie I have was a screen recording done with SL1, so this should output to the timeline fine, should... I actually think the real issue is with the effects. The processor goes through the roof when it gets to zoom effects and I think it just snowballs from there. The more I try to adjust the effects, the worse it seems to get. Being an instructional video, I am using a lot of the zoom feature. The more there are, the worse the problem seems to get. I have the issue, but not as bad, in shorter videos with less of these effects used. When playing, the timeline almost looks as though it is in slow motion at times. It jumps through the time in the timeline too, rather than seemlessly playing through and the slide reflecting what the playhead is actually playing.

I spoke to the sale rep in Australia from Microway, Simon. In discussion he mentioned it might be graphics related and my card might need the drivers upddated. I have done this with no change. I expect though it may still be processor/graphics related, even though the machines both have at least the minimum specs or above. I don't want to have to spend more money on a new machine or upgrading the laptop, is was a drama just getting the laptop in the first place, but I guess the software just won't do what I want or need it to do effectively without the machine have high end specs? I'll have to edit it in other software and bring it back at the moment, I've lost so much time on something that should take be less than 30 secs to do. I'll explore the hardware issue further.

Thanks, any immediate result would be great, even if it's user error...

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for sharing some additional information here. It sounds like you're running into a bit of the issue I mentioned, but that's specific to Storyline 2 and how the timeline scrubs with a video. Since you're seeing it in SL2 and SL1, and it seems to behave differently with videos of a different length? How long are the videos that you're seeing this behavior on? Also, have you confirmed that you're working on local project files as detailed here? You mentioned updating your graphic cards as well, and you may want to look into what other programs are running while you're working in Storyline , as it may be an overall memory issue. I'd suggest closing down other programs and applications to see if that helps with performance.

Shaun,

It is not a problem with your equipment, nor with your video.  When you try to start preview from the timeline when you are editing (a VERY handy and NECESSARY ability), if you start with the playhead anywhere besides the beginning, the timing of objects is significantly off. That really negates the idea of previewing from the time line and setting cue points on the fly. If the timing is off, the cue points are useless. I have personally experienced this on a large variety of computers and setups.

Ashley, please PUSH the QA people. This needs to be fixed, as the only way to check a timing or interaction between objects is to preview the entire slide from the beginning.

Hooray. Well kind of. I thought this was a unique issue to me as there has been no feed back to date nor obvious others with the problem. I have tried liaising with other Articulate support staff from Australia and one suggestion was to re-record the project using Replay. I originally did it via Articulate's screen recording option. So I will test this option also to eliminate the capturing method, but needless to say this has put some heavy breaks on the project as I do get the same issues with other sessions that use the same captured material.

I&CD Training

No worries with sharing the extra info Ashley, but this project is far from working as expected, as mentioned, it is likely I may have to re do the recording in Replay and then test if this is the reason for the issues, the screen recording asset that is. Unfortunately, this project hasn't been a good nor seamless experience...

Hello Ashley.

At this stage I haven't spoken to anyone about this issue except those I've spoken to in Australia. These are from the distribution company and not specifically your support team. So apart from the discussions with you I haven't spoken to support about this element. If someone from the support team can assist it would obviously be great, however one of the main issues is that I can't share the file as it has sensitive information on it. When I tried to do a project with a sample of the screen recorded material, the issue was worse. I also realised that Articulate doesn't cleanly cut the footage so the whole file would inherently be attached and I can't do that unfortunately.

Let me know if there's something we can do, I don't really want to record all the material again so this isn't my preferred option, but at the moment it might be faster...

Kind Regards,

Shaun Jackson

Hi Shaun,

If we're unable to look at the project, it's hard to say for certain what is happening, how to fix it or try and replicate the behavior - but the previous thread I shared was close in terms of similar behavior and that has been reported to our team. Could you create a sample project that does not include your sensitive information to share so that we could take a look at it? If you're able to share the file privately, we can also take a look by sending to our support engineers here.

I&CD Training

Hello again Ashley.

Can you assist and advise if I can export the screen recordings I captured with SL into a video file, mp4 or whatever, and then I can re-import them as individual assets. I have tried to find an export feature to do this but can only find a publish option and this only publishes within a player.

No answers/solutions to the issue and I really can't afford to re-capture the recordings using Replay. I expect this is the easiest option if available, however it doesn't look like it...

Thanks.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Shaun,

First I wanted to remind you that replying via email includes your signature here, so you're welcome to edit the post to remove that if you'd like.

Using Replay will only produce an MP4, so you won't be able to implement any triggers, try it mode, etc. using Replay. Those features are only accessible if utilizing the screen recording feature within Storyline and then choosing to insert as a step by step mode.

If you export a screen recording conducted in Storyline out as an MP4, when you insert that into a new Storyline project or the same Storyline project, it'll just be standard video file so you won't be able to add any of the usual screen recording elements to it.

I&CD Training

Hello Ashley. Thanks for the reminder, I replied via my email, not the forum. There's no edit feature there to remove the signature, so can you assist and have someone do it please. Probably because I replied via email - note to self...

Thanks, will see if I can resurrect this project in someway.

Hello Ashley. As mentioned, when I respond directly from my email then the option to edit or delete is not available to me or, I expect, anyone in the post. If you look at the bottom of this post as opposed to the one previous, you will see what I mean. Perhaps this is something that needs to be explored and rectified by your techies as it is a natural reaction to select the "reply" button in the email generated to me when there are responses to me from the post.

Anyway, please delete that post that has my signature block in it.

Thanks heaps.

Thanks Ashley for deleting the post. My comment is relating to the forum page. What I mean is that the editing/deleting options aren't available on the forum page if you respond from your email. When I look at the forum trail above, I can see the posts, like this one, that I submit from within the forum and all have the delete/edit function, but those that I responded to via my email don't provide me with the function from within the forum page.

Thanks Shaun for sharing that image here - and I've reached out to our web team to see if they can shed some light on if this is expected, a bug, etc.  It's the first I've heard of it and have seen other users who I suspect replied via email (based on the presence of their signature in the reply) be able to edit their posts - so it's a good find if it's a bug!

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Ok Shaun, I talked with my web team and they were able to track it down to that you have two different ELH profiles set up with the same exact name and the same avatar. I suspect this Shaun Jackson account is the one you don't want to use (as the email address is likely not a real address?). So, it appears based on the image you shared - you were looking to edit one post that you had replied to with a different account than the one you were logged in as.
