Using Like/Fuzzy Logic to Set a Range of Acceptable Answers for Required Text Entry

Mar 11, 2022

The title nearly says it all - I'm hoping to not have to define each possible acceptable answer in a text entry question since I don't feel confident I can even accurately come up with them all. And entering them all manually will be taxing when using multiple text entry requirements.

I would love to learn about some kind of ability to set a relative acceptable answer that covers additional possibilities. I have seen this accomplished elsewhere by using asterisk to define where additional text is insignificant. For example, "Christmas*" would accept "Christmas time"; "Christmas jingles"; etc. But it would always require that "Christmas" is the first word.

Is anything like this possible? If not, has it seemed like there is any interest in this kind of logic.

This is a non trivial issue and part of one of the main problems with any sort of text entry.
Text entries must be character correct.

I don't know how or if storyline handles wild cards, but even then there are too many possibilities for the learner to unfairly get it wrong.  Remember there is no spell check for this type of data entry.

I would recommend never using text entry in an assessment.

As said, Fuzzy Logic is possible in Storyline. Showing a sample i just made here.

In the options you can change the amount of characters that need to be correct and some other Fuse related options to determine whether the answer is good enough.

Here is the Storyline file for anyone interested.
