Video Color Issue

Jun 19, 2019

Hello!

I've been having a problem with the colors of a video imported as .mp4 to my Articulate project. I'm not sure if it's a Storyline problem, but I need help to investigate!

I've made a subtitle bar on the bottom of the slide, as a regular shape, with the colors of the logo of the client. The video plays behind it, and it was made on After Effects using the exact same colors (we checked the rgb codes and everything). Some users reported a wild difference of color in between the elements of the video (much lighter than it should be, in a different tone) and the subtitle bar (that appears normally).

Any ideas or clues would be much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Hello Rush CILL.

Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue.

The bug discussed in this thread has already been addressed in an earlier release of Storyline 360. Since you're experiencing a similar behavior, I'd like to take a closer look at your project file to check what's happening.

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case for testing? We'll delete it when we're done testing!

Hi Mark,

I'm sorry to hear you've hit this snag! There could be other factors causing the color change on your end since the earlier bug has already been resolved. We'd be happy to dig deeper. Please open a support case with us and share the affected Storyline file, we'll delete our copy afterwards.

I appreciate your patience!

Hello S Ruy,

That's quite a drastic change that's happening to your video when its imported into Storyline 360. The bug discussed in this thread has been fixed, so I'd like to see if the behavior you're experiencing is specific to your video file.

We are still seeing colours changing when importing mp4 videos into storyline, you mention that this bug has been fixed but there are many video colour profiles and video codecs available which may have not been catered for in Storyline or with this bug fix.

Instead of us sharing the project files to look for issues with specific video files would it be possible to specify the most compatible colour profile and/or the video codec please?
I know that FLV and MP4 are the preferred file types but if we are building custom animations in aftereffects and importing them into SL it would be much better if we know what we are targetting compatability-wise. As we see this a lot and have yet to see a fix suggested in the forums.

The way we are having to workaround this issue is once the video is in SL we have to do a colour pic and change the colours to match the imported video. This is not prefered as it means we are changing brand colours and in some cases the colour change is quite dramatic.

Hello Kris,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue too. This article lists all of the supported video formats that you can import into a Storyline 360 project. As for color profiles and video codecs, there isn't a specific format that you need to follow.

One troubleshooting step that you can do is to re-encode your videos if you're encountering any issues with how they are imported into Storyline 360. Handbrake is a great tool for this. You can download Handbrake here, and this helpful Youtube video shows how you can use it to re-encode your videos and change the profiles and codecs that they use.

If re-encoding doesn't help, please open a case with our support team here so we can take a closer look at your videos.

I'm experiencing the same issue too. Importing a vibrant video from premiere pro mutes the colours significantly in Storyline. I've fixed it for me by messing with the colour temperature, tint and saturation in Premiere Pro, but I'm not sure that this is a fix for everyone:

  1. Temp: +1
  2. Tint: +5
  3. Saturation: +10

Note that this is for Premiere Pro only and *may* only work for my images (produced in Blender, imported through Lightroom into a Premiere Pro image sequence). You need to use trial and error to find the best result for your videos.

To be even more annoying, you also need to make sure you download the gamma correction LUT for Premiere Pro that is freely available online.

I am having a similar issue with color in video added to Storyline 360 and hope you can help. I have been encoding video at 988x556 size and have decided I should be using a more standard size like 1024x576.

The larger size video looks fine everywhere but when published from Storyline. Even when I select "No Compress" on the video. I created the video using Adobe After Effects and encode with Adobe Media Encoder. I've attached a .Story file with 2 video samples and screen shots so you can see the issue. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hello Zachary!

Thank you for sharing your .story file! It sounds like you're just seeing this behavior when publishing the course to Review and not just in Storyline itself. Are you finding this when viewing the course in multiple browsers? Lastly, have you created other videos using Adobe After Effects and encoded them with Adobe Media Encoder, and seen this same contrast behavior in Review 360?

Zachary Guidry

Good idea on checking other browsers. I checked the Review course and found that I see the darkening in Chrome and Edge. I do not see the problem in Firefox.

I have created 2 videos at 1024x576 size and see the problem in both videos. These are short  test videos and I can easily create more samples.

Thank you for your help!

Update on this issue - "Use hardware acceleration when available" option in chromium affects the color of the video. Turning off this option allows the video to play back as expected.

It makes sense that I am seeing the issue in Chrom and Edge since they are both chromium browsers.

This is progress, but doesn't fix the issue. I want to ensure the end user sees the video properly. I'm continuing to research the problem...

Zachary Guidry

It all comes down to Hardware Acceleration in Chrome and color management. I was using a non-standard video size that did not allow Hardware Acceleration and once I changed video sizes is when I started having color issues. I wasn't matching color spaces in After Effects and Media Encoder. I'm going to export my videos directly from After Effects using the sRGB color space.
