Why do I get a thick grey color border after I publish my file in a video format?

Jul 25, 2018

Hi,

Whenever I publish my file in a video format, I get to see a grey color border around the published video. Currently I am using Articulate 360 (v3.17.16188.0)
Request for assistance for the same or provide a solution if any.

Please have a look at the attached screenshot for a better understanding.

Thanking in advance.

I'm so sorry you've come across this problem, Mohammed. We've identified an issue in Storyline 360 where publishing to video produces a border in the MP4 output file.

I know how frustrating this can be for a course creator, as the goal is to produce high-quality work -- both visually and contextually. While I don't have any workarounds to share at this time, you're in the right place. We'll let you know as much as we can, as soon as we can!

Really looking forward to a fix or workaround for this very bizarre “feature”…

I use the Publish to Video feature regularly to publish screen recordings so that I can give them some severe editing in a video editor.

However, if you want to add a full-screen screenshot created in some other program (or even from within the SL video timing editor dialog), it appears bigger because it doesn’t have this border.

In this case, my solution is to publish the screenshot to video from inside SL, and then grab a frame from the resulting video instead. Yuk!

I understand Shay.

You're in the right place to be notified of any updates we have to share on this topic.

I do appreciate you sharing your workaround with the community. It may not be ideal, but it could certainly help someone in a pinch if they run across this conversation.

Hi all,

Just to let you know that I somehow managed to publish my courses to 1080p video from Storyline 360 without the grey borders!

I am not entirely sure how, but I do recall reading another post where they suggested publishing to another resolution first (e.g. 720p) and then trying 1080p again – and it seems to have worked.

Of course, the workaround I mentioned above about taking screenshots with the border needed to be un-done but that’s OK as I’m glad it is fixed…

Hey, folks! I wanted to let you know we fixed the issue you reported where publishing to video would produce a border in the MP4 output file.

Install the latest Storyline 360 update to take advantage of all the recent features and fixes.

If the problem happens again, please record a Peek 360 screencast for me, and I’ll be happy to help!

Hi Jordan,

That issue looks a bit different than the ones discussed earlier in this thread. Can you share a copy of your .story file so that we can take a closer look? If so, you can upload at this link using the Add Attachment button or you always have an option to share privately with our Support Engineers. Either way, we'll delete it when done testing.

Greetings, Jordan!

Thank you for sharing your setup in addition to that recording. It was super helpful to see!

I opened the course in Storyline 360, Update 30, where I also see the gray border around 2-7b.MP4 on slide 1.5. So strange! The good news is that you can crop out that distraction with the cropping toolHere's quick Peek 360 recording of my test and how the video looks after the edit!

In the meantime, this is a great opportunity for our Support Engineers to lend a hand! I opened a case with them where they'll reach out with their findings on what might be causing that by email shortly.

I'll follow along to share any relevant insight here, too!

Hi Shay, Phoebe, and Mohammed,

Great news today - Storyline 360, build 3.31.19951.0 is available today!

It includes a fix for the issue where white lines or borders could appear around slides in published content.

Updating to the latest version is free and easy for Articulate 360 users following the steps outlined here.  If you run into any trouble, let us know here in the E-Learning Heroes Community or message our Support Team. We're here to help! 🌟

Hi Vishal,

Have you tried removing the shape outline of the video object? You can take a look at my response here where I detailed how the shape outlines of objects can be removed.

If this doesn't work, would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here so I can test your file and see how the outline in your screenshot can be removed?

Jose Tansengco

Hi Vishal,

If it's not related to shape outlines, would you mind sharing a copy of your project file here so we can take a look at what's causing the lines to appear? We'll delete them as soon as we're done troubleshooting. You can also open a case with our support team if you prefer to share your project file in private.
