Caption Use Cases

Hi Team,

I have not used captions before and would like to understand how captions can be used in Storyline. Currently, I have Storyline 3. I played with the captions on a video I inserted in SL3 a few minutes ago and it seems pretty straightforward for creating them.

Are captions only allowed to be added to videos?

Can slides and layers have captions even if there is no video and only onscreen visuals?

Can captions only be used in SL3 and SL360 or can they be used/added in Rise as well?

What other use cases and/or things are good to know about captions?

Thanks in advance!

Any audio can have captions, so there’s really no limit to where (layers ...) you can show them.

    Hi Philip,

Thanks for reaching out here—and I'm happy to answer your question:

If you use Storyline 360 and publish to video after adding the captions, does the produced video show the captions when played?

Closed captions are part of the Player, so they’re not included when publishing for video. As a workaround, you can manually create a comprehensive caption file using another tool.

Thanks, Becca. Can captions be added in Articulate Replay?

I've never created a caption file before and am looking for an easy way to add captions to videos. The files will be placed on our intranet which is why I cannot publish them to SCORM.

    Thanks for your help!

      Hello Philip!

We don't currently have a feature in Replay where you can create captions. However, we have logged this as a feature request and linked this discussion. I'll review this with my team and update you in this discussion.

In the meantime, I hope members of the community will share workarounds if they've achieved something similar.
