Course resets after completion despite resume settings in Player
Hi, my team is facing an issue in which all our courses, after being completed by students, completely reset.
Our courses all have Restricted menu navigation so that users may not jump ahead, but may return to slides they've already visited.
We have tried both "Always resume" or "Prompt to resume" on restart in the Player settings.
Experiencing the following behaviors:
- GOOD: If a user is part way through a course, exits it, then returns, the course successfully resumes where the user left off.
- PROBLEM: If a user completes a course (passed, marked as complete in LMS), exits it, then returns, the course resets - meaning the user is dropped on the first slide of the course rather than last, the menu becomes fully restricted as if the user was just beginning the course for the first time, and all slides set to Resume Previous State must be watched all the way through again. This is preventing use of completed courses for reference material.
How do we get completed courses to save their menus' fully "unlocked" states?
(Note: We are using Storyline 2.)

Hi Leslie,
Currently, we have the resume behavior set as "Always Resume" -- should it be "Prompt to Resume"?
We were able to find a walk-around this issue. We will upload the restricted / gated versions and after the learners have completed; we will give them access to the unrestricted / ungated versions so they can reference the trainings and navigate freely.
Thanks,
Peter
Thanks, Peter. How is the resume behavior set for your course?
I want to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening with your permission. You can share it publicly here or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Hi Leslie,
I am referring to navigation restriction -- after completion of the course, learners should be able to navigate "freely" (i.e., next button and the table of contents should be "unlocked"). Currently, after learners complete the course and exit out the window, if they wanted to refer back to the module, all of the navigation becomes restricted as if the learner is viewing the content for the first time.
The solutions above mention we should change the tracking options or update to the following: "var REVIEW_MODE_IS_READ_ONLY = false;" We have tried both suggestions but it did not seem to fix the issue.
No problem, Peter.
I'm unclear what you mean by ungated? Are you referring to a navigation restriction or resuming the content? The information I shared above is specific to resuming.
Can you explain the issue that you're running into?
Also, if you're unclear if an issue lies within the project or within your LMS, I invite you to test in a standard environment like SCORM Cloud to compare. If you're unable to replicate the issue you're seeing, I'd follow up with your LMS team.

Hi Leslie,
Thanks for the link. I will change the reporting option to Passed/Incomplete or Passed/Failed. I guess my question is, can the file be UNGATED after a learner has met the completion requirement? We're not sure if this is an LMS issue since we are using ACTO. Please let me know if there's any other workarounds this.
Thank you,
Peter
Hello Peter,
I appreciate you chiming in with what you are experiencing.
You may find that the resume feature doesn't work as you'd expect after you've met the completion requirement for your course (viewing the required number of slides, passing a quiz, or reaching a completion trigger). Most LMSs consider a course to be in review mode after the tracking requirement has been met. In review mode, resume data is no longer sent to the LMS, which prevents learners from accidentally changing their course status back to incomplete. See this article for more information.

Hello Articulate team,
I am also having a similar issue as many of the folks above. I have a storyline file that restarts at the beginning GATED, after the learner has completed the course (i.e., reviewed all slides). Is there a resolution?
Thank you!
Peter

Hi Kris,
Thanks for sharing your experience! If you see the same results in SCORM Cloud, then I'd like to have our support team take a closer look at your file and provide some next steps after getting a better idea of why this is happening!
Feel free to connect with our team, and we'll go from there!

Hi Ren,
Took me months to respond as the notification was caught in junk. But i'm back now and have submitted a case to the team!
thanks

Has this issue not been resolved yet? The issue seems to go back many years...
I have a Rise course which once the success criteria is met (view percentage 95%) the course is passed but when the user relaunches the course it resets the course. This isn't acceptible as the sections are set to restricted (by deisgn) therefore the user is forced to go through the entire course again to get to the topic they wish to re-read.
I'm baffled as to why this hasn't been fixed as it isn't an LMS issue as it is present in Scorm cloud too. All we are looking for a slider to be added to the export settings to "always resume the course (even after successful completion)" This will then allow courses to be used as reference material after completion.
Is there plans to fix this issue or is there a workaround present which we can adopt for the time being?

Hi, Krystine.
This sounds like it could be LMS Specific. Some LMSes won't allow the user to resume a completed course, so a new launch will be considered a new attempt once a course is completed. Can you ask the LMS Admin for more details on the standards they use to report?
Take a look here for some additional information on Rise 360's completion report settings.
