Customizing "Zoom Picture"?

The location of the "zoomed" version of the image depends on the location of the smaller image on the slide. The image that you see when the smaller version is zoomed is the original, larger version of the image. If you'd like to adjust the size of the image that's shown, you'll need to adjust the size of the original image, if that makes sense.

The zoom will work only if you've resized the image on your slide to be smaller than the original — for example, if you've inserted a 500x500 pixel image and then resized it to be 250x250, the zoom icon will allow learners to see zoom the image to its original 500x500 size. So, if the full-sized image is too large or covering your player elements, you could just resize the original image to the desired size and then place it on the slide and add the zoom effect. 

So, one method you could try is inserting the image you'd like to modify and adjusting it to the desired size. Right-click on the image and choose "Save as picture...". Save the new version of the image, then remove the original. Insert the new version of the image and apply the zoom feature to it. Now, it should show up for the new and preferred size.

Here's a quick little example I created for you. 

I'm sure others may have some better suggestions, just wanted to throw this out there for you. As far as I know, though, I don't think you can assign a zoom to a specific area - it seems to be tied to the location of the image you insert.

I've got a handle on the issue of sizing the images, yet--like Ian--I can't control where the zoomed version of the image appears on the slide.

I've tried a number of different approaches, but can't find a way to specify the location. The attached .story will give an indication of what's happening. It has two slides. The zoom of the top two photos centers over them, yet the zoom for the bottom photo appears in the upper left of the player, regardless of where I move the original. I've even tried reinserting the original image and going through the cropping process again, but that doesn't change the location.

This behavior occurs throughout the course (12 modules), with different zoomed images appearing in various locations.

Can you or anyone else help with this?

Hi Allan! Christine has actually taken another position here at Articulate and does not make it back to the forums often.  It seems as if the feature that you are using is pretty standard and hard to customize (unless I'm missing it too and a community member may be able to step in and assist).  I did want to point you to a couple of other threads (here and here) that offer beautiful zoom effects. I hope that this helps.

Hi, sorry for digging this old post up.

Instead of trying to position where the image will enlarge to, is there a way to restrict the image from extending outside the story size?

If I position the image away from the edge it will zoom fine but it will always extend 5px outside the story size if the unzoomed image is too close to the edge.

Hi Ray, 

There isn't a way to customize that zoom element further and restrict it from going outside the story size - so instead I'd look at resizing the overall image or how far you're going to zoom in.

Are you noticing that the zoom region appears glitchy or jerky when you use the "very slow" setting? Do you see an improvement if you use a different transition speed?
