Embedding a YouTube video and setting up parameters

I have been working for two days on embedding a YouTube video into my Storyline 360 e-learning and cannot get the video to play without ads, branding, and other crazy controls. I've played with a lot of parameters and I'm really struggling.  I would like as pure a video as possible. I've even tried the Premium YouTube license, but still to no avail.  I've read through several other discussions, but they don't seem to address my issue.

Can someone share the way to embed a video from YouTube without displaying all of the clutter, or share the exact code I need to embed this video? I want the user to see the play button, press play, the video plays, and then stops without suggested videos or ads at the end.

  • Hi Jodi,

Here are some of my thoughts to the best of my knowledge.

YouTube is a service for people to upload their videos and allow other people to see them. However, they have the right to do what they want, including running ads. As an administrator of a YouTube channel, I can also tell you that I determine if cards offering subscriptions or additional videos are added to my videos and viewers can't change that.

If you want to play back videos as "purely" as possible, you really may need to consider an Online Video Platform (OVP), such as muse.ai or Vimeo. This allows you to embed video and play it back without ads and with playback controls you choose.

I am guessing you do not own the video that you are trying to embed, so an OVP wouldn't work for you anyway.

My suggestion would be to contact the owner of the video via YouTube and ask if you can have a copy of the video to use in your course. This will do 2 things: 1) allow you to embed the video into your e-learning course "as is" without YouTube's control, clutter, etc., and 2) make sure that you have permission to include the video in a published e-learning course.

You may have thought of some of this already, but I thought I would throw out my thoughts.

Thank you for your information. I'll think about your suggestions and maybe those are my only options.

  • Hi Nedim, thank you for your response. I tried embedding the link you sent and unfortunately, it shows an ad at the end. (image) Additionally, I wish all of the controls along the bottom could be turned off. Darn. I think some of the parameters such as ?rel=0 and modestbranding=1 have been depreciated, so they don't impact the video like they once used to. I'm open to other ideas you may find....I'm unfortunately still stuck.

Instead of ?rel=0, try using &rel=0 to remove the recommended videos. However, I don't know of any way to remove the bottom controls like you're wanting.
