Issue with resizing rectangles less than 50px high?
I've never got round to posting this but it's started irritating me now so worth an ask. Is there a setting I've missed that would cause me to struggle very much to resize any rectangle to less than 50px height? It keeps snapping back to 50px. I usually get there after threatening the computer and trying a few times (usually having to type the exact height, but often I don't know the exact height I want as I use it for things like highlighting or covering parts of software screens), but this is very annoying. It has persisted for me over several versions of SL. I'm not on the latest version but I don't update during a long project precisely because strange things happen when we update. Recording of a small amount of my screen included for illustration - you'll notice it snapping back to 50 multiple times.

Great point - I don't often have to use a circle / oval but this has definitely happened as well. It's frustrating when they're new issues though - some new functionality is introduced somewhere that causes something to happen that didn't in the past. Well, at least I know the reason. I've now got two workarounds so it's better than nowt! Thanks for the input Phil.

I would go with Judy, I find ovals often resize from circles to ovals because of this.l

That doesn't sound like expected behavior. If the rectangle consistently snaps back to 50px, it could be related to grid snapping, object alignment settings, or a long-standing Storyline bug. Since you've seen it across multiple versions, it's probably not project-specific. One thing to check is whether "Snap to Grid" or similar alignment options are enabled. If typing a value below 50px works but dragging doesn't, that points more toward a UI or resizing issue than an actual size restriction. It would be interesting to know if others can reproduce it, as your screen recording seems to show the behavior quite clearly.

Best guess: the shape is set to autofit to the height of its (potential) text. Here's how to ensure it won't adjust its height automatically.
- Right-click the shape and select Format Shape.
- Go to the Text Box section.
- Set Autofit setting to "Fixed size."

Thanks Judy, that's an interesting thought, because I think the issue might have started around the time all the annoying rounded corner handles and the autofit icon being available from the shape itself was released. However in terms of your specific solution, that's what my shape is set to. And the volume of shapes I use it would be mighty irritating to have to do it for every single one when it wasn't previously an issue. T'is an odd one. But I do wonder if you're on the right lines there.

Update: I think you are right here. I reduced the font size in the format tab (even though no text added) as our text size is semi-large for software simulation captions, and dropped the margins down to zero and it allows me to resize it much smaller but it still snaps back to a height that seems to be a bit over the font size plus margins. So actually, this appears to be a bug I guess, because a shape that we have no intention of adding text to should not have to have text settings altered to be able to create a rectangle of, say 15 px height. Maybe I'll have to use very thick lines instead

Just in case this is relevant, I should add that I only have "Snap objects to other objects" on in Grid and Guides settings. And this takes place on any screen whether any object or not is on there.

I'm not able to reproduce this behavior, and don't recall ever experiencing it before. Only on textboxes and shapes that have text maybe due to their cell padding, but even then, I'm not certain. My Grid and Guides settings are identical to yours.
Perhaps it would be worth uninstalling and reinstalling Storyline when you get to a point that makes sense? I very much understand waiting until a major project is done to update, but the app does get better and better so it's ultimately to our advantage.

Thanks for the check in Andrew and for having a look on yours and checking settings. Sadly SL may well improve with each version, but I tend to find some new, very random (in the sense that not all users on the team experience them) silly little bugs and issues like these can suddenly occur out of the blue and persist even with each new update. Very strange. I suspect you're right that I'll have to uninstall and reinstall - that in itself will be an adventure in my organisation right now so I'll wait for a quiet week I should think. Thanks again for looking!
