Issues with NVDA screen reader and multiple choice questions within Rise 360

Our team is currently working on a Rise course around accessibility in the workplace, and of course this entire course would need to be fully accessible in the broadest sense of the word.

We have been testing and developing our first few lessons within Rise 360 and have come across the following issue: when using only keyboard navigation and the NVDA screen reader, if the user answers a multiple choice question, it seems as if the focus of the screen reader shifts towards the sidebar. It begins reading all of the lesson titles, instead of the intended behavior of stating if the answer is correct or incorrect and then reading the feedback.

This behavior does not occur with JAWS. We have also tested this on various PC's, NVDA settings and both a preview and published version of the course. It also seems to occur in clean projects containing just a multiple choice question block.

Any advise on this matter is welcome.

Thank you!

  • Hi NathanViaene-ca for the course you are testing, what was the date of publish of the course? I reported a similar issue in February, and was notified that it has been resolved 11 April. I have not yet confirmed if the issue has been resolved.

The unusual thing is that the issue I experienced affected JAWS and Windows Narrator, but not NVDA. Here's the synopsis of my issue:

Screen reader focus would be sent to the top of the page every time I answered a multiple choice question when using Windows Narrator and JAWS.

I'll go and re-test the content that prompted me to report the original issue to see if it has been resolved.

  • Hi NathanViaene-ca hopefully if you publish the content again it will be ok. I just ran a simple test featuring a CB and RB multiple choice question and the screen reader focus was predictable and correct for NVDA, JAWS and Windows Narrator.

If the content hasn't been publish since April 11, I would highly recommend it and testing again. If the issue continues, I would recommend raising a support ticket directly with Articulate as they can work with your files privately. If you are able to build a simple test case too, this is also really helpful.

Let me know how you go.

  • Hello SamHill , our original publish was from April 9th, we just republished and the issue seems to be resolved in a publish version, however it still remains in a review and preview version of the course.

      Hi NathanViaene-ca,

Great to see Sam has been helping you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble accessibility testing your Rise course with NVDA. I tested the playback of a sample Rise course with a Multiple Choice Question Block, using NVDA. However, the focus never shifted to the Lesson menu. Also, NVDA dictated my answer choice and feedback as expected.

      • Here's a quick Peek of how it sounded while previewing the course in Rise.

You mentioned the issue was resolved after republishing, but still appears "in Review and while Previewing". Do you mind clarifying that a bit more? Does the issue occur when testing a Review 360 link, and while previewing, but not when publishing to other formats such as LMS or the Web?

Also, it would be helpful to see a screen recording of the experience on your end. Feel free to upload that here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
