It's 2024; Why doesn't Storyline 360 support GIF?

While you can use GIF files in Storyline, and they are technically supported, I've never had as worse experience with GIF files than I have with Storyline. Primarily my main issue, and my biggest gripe, is the level of inconsistency Storyline has handling GIF files.

For example, I set up 2 GIF files that act as transitions; an intro transition and an outro transition, used on select slides. They're virtually identical, except one plays forward and one plays backward, but both are 1280 x 720 and set to loop once, with extended frames at the end to add any buffer. I have an object that runs along a motion path, off screen, that proceeds to the next slide once the GIF should be "done" playing.

Now, on one slide, the outro GIF loops several times. On another slide, the GIF is just entirely white when it's revealed. On another slide, it loops several times but twice as fast as it should normally play. On some slides it strobes at the end. Though on several other slides, it plays perfectly fine. Sometimes the issues don't appear on Review 360, sometimes they only appear once its uploaded to the LMS. Other times, the issues appear in Review 360, but not the LMS. All the same file. All set up the same exact way.

However, if I adjust the GIF files to address one issue or another, or reupload them, then the slides that had "Issue A" will now have "Issue B", and the ones that had "Issue B" will now have "Issue C", etc. I can use these GIF files, without issue, in any other program; from presentation software, to Adobe products, to game development software. I've never had an issue using/creating GIF files with other programs, for 20+ years, until Storyline 360.

This has been an issue for as far back as I can remember, though with all of the updates and improvements the things not being fixed or updated begin to stand out more and more. What makes it frustrating is that its also a challenge to troubleshoot, since the issues are inconsistent and can't really be pinned down.

Will Storyline provide better support for GIF files?

Will there potentially be consideration for JSON files?

Could Articulate release some guide or best practices for using GIF files within Storyline, and what to avoid?

Am I missing some key element with using GIF files exclusive to Storyline?

For troubleshooting purposes: I've tried saving the GIF about two-dozen different ways, including saving different file sizes, dimensions, colors, frames, etc. Each time it made things worse, or improved some things while making others worse. Additionally, this isn't a new issue, or one exclusive to this specific project. I've had this issue, as well as other documented issues with GIFs that I've submitted. However, usually I can find a workaround and swap out the GIF files to fix it - not this time...

Ultimately, I cut the number of frames down to a quarter, broke the GIF up into separate images in Photoshop (Exporting Layers to Files) and then loaded each one as a state ("1" for Frame 1, "2" for Frame 2, etc.) Then, I set an animation to run at 0.1 seconds and change the state from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, etc. each time it completes. The animation lost a bit of quality, since Storyline doesn't allow anything faster than 0.1 seconds and the frames cut down to 1/4, but at least we don't have to cut the animation out entirely - which was becoming the most practical option.

    • Hi Spencer,

Sorry to hear about your troubles with GIF files, and thanks for sharing all the troubleshooting steps you've taken. I opened a support case on your behalf to get you in touch with a support engineer who can review your experience. You're in good hands, and someone will be in touch shortly to shed more light on what's happening.
