New button when publishing Rise to LMS

I have just spotted a new button when publishing Rise to LMS (it could have been there a while, but I have only just seen it).

Only Load in LMS

Please can anybody advise me when this button first appeared, and if they have had any issues with it?

It defaults to "On" and I am concerned we may have published content with it checked without realising - hopefully, it just means people can only access content from our LMS but just concerned in case it effects links from other web pages to our content.

Thanks

  • Hello SarahWhitfie615! You found it fast, as this addition was just released yesterday! If you haven't published any courses since yesterday, then this toggle wouldn't have impacted your previous courses. If you did publish courses yesterday or today, then you'd need to republish if you don't want that option toggled on.

Thanks for advising and for the link - although maybe it was released earlier in UK as I saw this last week and we had a query about it from our translation agency on Monday (Dec 1st).

Just to confirm - if we have links in our courses where we want the user to open a web page in a new window, we have to toggle this option off.

I can't speak generically, but we tested a course with the toggle on, and links within the course worked fine. It prevented us from opening any additional sessions of the course. IF you don't receive a response from Articulate soon, I'd partner with your LMS administrator to test a course and make sure it works the way you're expecting.

Yes, will someone confirm Sarah's statement? I have two Rise courses that our LMS team cannot get to upload. They do have a web page link, so could this be the cause?

  • Yes, please could someone provide more information on what this button means? What is the difference in behavior of the course with the option "ON" vs. "OFF" ?

  • I have many of the SCORMS that were usually published on our webpage (not LMS). With the update beginning of November these did no longer work, and I had to publish the courses for "web".

This new button now, will it again allow me to publish SCORMS again on the webpage (no LMS)?

  • Hi,

    Just following up on this...
If we have links in our courses where we want the user to open a web page in a new window, do we have to toggle this option off, or should we leave it on.
This was not clear from the original reply to the question.

After troubleshooting further with the SAP support team, this new feature was not the issue with my courses. Still looking forward to more information on this new feature.

      Hi MaricelCohen!

Thanks for following up and sharing the feedback!

I see that you've also been working with my teammate Angelo, through a support case. So glad to hear SAP support was able to identify the issue and help implement a fix!

Also, I shared more context on the Rise 360 setting Only Load in LMS, here.

Please let us know if you need anything else!

  • Why does nobody from Articulate respond to the questions raised in connection with the toggle button? Testing this button with our external source (our uploads to our webpage is not being done by myself) would not be feasible!

So again, I am asking the following:

    • What exactly does this button (toggled on or off) do?
    • Will it address the problem that since the last couple of updates, Scorms can no longer be launched outside LMS?

    Thanks!

      Hi IrisSchlabitz!

      Happy to help!

The Rise 360 setting, Only Load in LMS, should be toggled Off if you require course content to be launched and viewed in windows outside of an LMS environment. However, I'd like to highlight that this setting only applies to LMS/SCORM publications.

To your second question, SCORM packages are specifically designed to work in LMS environments only. A "normal website" does not have the capabilities to function fully as an LMS. It's possible a site might unpack the files and serve the index.html asset, making the course appear to run. But it is technically no longer running as a SCORM. It would be identical to a Web export at that point.

If you're not using an LMS, then Web output is the most effective way to publish your Rise 360 content moving forward.

Please let me know if you need anything else!

Adding my voice to the chorus here seeking clarity from Articulate on what this toggle does: what is the difference in behavior between toggling "Only Load in LMS" on or off?

  • Hi Everyone!

Happy to provide more clarity on the Rise 360 setting, Only Load in LMS!

If your Rise 360 course contains content and elements that must be launched in a separate window, outside of an LMS environment, we suggest toggling this feature Off when publishing. However, please note that Quiz and Completion tracking will not be supported in these additional windows.

To prevent Rise 360 content from being launched and viewed in separate windows outside of your LMS, Only Load in LMS should be toggled On.

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

      Hi Steven!

Do you mind further clarifying (maybe with an example) what this new publishing setting affects? I just tested a course I developed where one SCORM file had this setting toggled to ON, and the other version (of the same course) had it toggled to OFF. During my test, the links I have hyperlinked as buttons inside of the course opened the exact same way as new tabs in the browser. So, I am stumped on what this publishing setting differentiates between courses.

Thanks in advance for your help!

        Hi ShelbyPittman-a!

Absolutely! Happy to explain this further!

The Rise 360 publish setting Only Load in LMS does not control whether regular links open in new tabs or windows. Links (including button hyperlinks) behave the same either way because those settings are handled by the browser and not Rise 360.

What the setting does control is whether the Rise course itself is allowed to run outside of an LMS context. For example, if someone opens the course URL directly, or if the course launches itself into a new window outside of an LMS shell.

Imagine your Rise course is published to an LMS and normally launches inside the LMS player.

        • Only Load in LMS = ON
          • The course checks: "Am I running inside an LMS?"
          • If yes, it loads normally.
          • If no, it will not fully load the course content.
        • Only Load in LMS = OFF
          • The course does not require an LMS environment and can load even if:
            • Someone opens the course URL directly.
            • The course is launched into a separate browser window.
            • The LMS spawns additional windows outside of the main player.

Also, in those cases, quiz and completion tracking will not function in the additional windows.

Essentially, this setting governs where the Rise course can run, not how links inside the course behave.

Please let me know if you still have questions!

Has anyone experienced these kinds of issues with xAPI packages since the update?
