New Rise Feature: Sidebar Visibility
Hey Everyone,
We released a new feature to Rise today that allows you to set sidebar visibility.
You can now choose to:
- Set the sidebar to be open at course launch (default)
- Set the sidebar to be closed at course launch
- Remove the sidebar completely from the course
Check out this 90 second video for the details:

Enjoy!

Hi Brent,
Great idea - and although it's not a current feature in Rise, I may have a method that'll work for you! I recorded a quick Peek to show you what I'm thinking - an easy way to showcase just one Rise interaction.
Let me know if you need anything else!

If you turn off the sidebar entirely, it also turns off the lesson navigation on the title screen.
Can these actions be separated? Id like to be able to still display the lessons on the title screen and disable the sidebar within those lessons.
Hi Brian,
You're right - they're both controlled by that one setting. I'll pass along the idea to look at splitting them up!
Hi Theresa,
For the details you'd like to remove, are you thinking the lesson type/icons that are shown? If I'm misunderstanding, it would help if you could share a screenshot with some notes on what you'd like to see changed! Thanks. 🙂

Hi! Collapsing the sidebar to only show the course and not the sub pages is really a must - would be super to get this feature asap!
Hi Mamie,
Could you share more about only showing the course, but not the sub pages?
Typically we refer to the entire item created as a Course (Example Course) and within that, you can have Sections (TOPIC 1) which are like headers/dividers that can break up your Lessons (Watch this Video).
I took a screenshot of what this would look like on the Introduction screen:

This is very useful. Another step, which I have already requested, is the ability to edit the Lesson Icons on the homepage, as the the default one have no value to the user. The icons should match the topic of the lesson rather than the lesson type. This will be an alternative until we can use our own Lesson icons.

Can the width of the left menu be adjusted? It takes up a considerable percentage of screen size - almost a third. We need this to be considerably smaller, to allow for more real estate on the page for the content.
Rise seems to be created with excessive padding both in the title bar (as chatted about above) and in the left menu. I'd like to request the ability to adjust these sizes as a feature request.
Hey Beth!
While you can set the sidebar to be closed at course launch to allow for more screen real-estate, there isn't a way to adjust the sidebar width. We're always excited to hear ideas from the community, so thanks for letting us know what you'd like to see!

I love the fact that you can set the sidebar to open or closed (or not have one at all).
We are experiencing a problem though - once you get past the first screen there is no way to toggle between open or closed. If you want to access the sidebar, you must have it open on the first screen and then scroll past, and vice versa if you want it hidden. The hamburger button disappears after the first screen. This makes it difficult when reaching a point later in the course and possibly wanting to toggle the sidebar visibility.
I am not sure if this is the expected behaviour or if it may be a bug? But can the hamburger button remain available past the first page so we can toggle the sidebar later without having to scroll back to the very first page of the course, please?
Thanking you
Marcia

Hi Marcia,
Thanks for posting your question. I am not sure I am 100% clear of what you're saying. What setting do you have the sidebar set to?

Hi Nicole
Thanks for the response. I have attached a video of a test course to better explain what I mean. Regardless of whether the sidebar is set to hidden or visible by default, the only place the learner has the option to change whether the sidebar is open or closed is in the very first block. As soon as you scroll down past the first block, the hamburger icon disappears and the sidebar is locked into whatever position was selected. The only way to change the position is to scroll all the way to the first block again. While this is not difficult when there is very little content on the page, it becomes painful when you have continued through a lot of content and then perhaps want to open the menu again (or close it). Especially on a mobile device where you want to use as much of the screen as possible to view the content, but may need to refer to the menu from time to time, this is an issue.
I hope this clarifies the question?
Many thanks
Marcia

Thank you Marcia, for making that video and for your further explanation. It does clarify and I do understand now what you mean. That is the expected behaviour (not a bug) but I can see your point and understand how you'd like it to be glued/stuck so the hamburger icon is always visible, no matter how far down the page you've scrolled. I would highly encourage you to make a feature request for that. Our dev team is always making updates and rolling out new features and one of the key ways we identify what to implement is through feature requests from our customers. Thanks again for taking the time to leave a comment and share your feedback with us! We appreciate that.
