Post Learner Essay Responses

Hello,

It's been awhile since I have created a discussion! I am working on a new Storyline module where I want to create a survey essay question. Learners type in their responses to an open-ended question. Later in the course, I want to bring up or post their responses as we launch into a related section. How would I do this?

As best I can figure out, I need to create a results slide for the essay response that comes in right when I want it to during the related section. Is that right?

  • Hi, Barbara,

When you create a Short Answer or Essay survey question (or just insert a text-entry field), Storyline automatically creates a variable to store whatever the user types in the field.

In the example above, the variable is called "TextEntry." If I added another text-entry field, its variable would be called "TextEntry1" and so on.

The text typed into a text-entry field is automatically stored as the variable's value. You can show the value at any time by inserting a variable reference. Use the INSERT > Reference function. Or just type the variable name between percent signs wherever you want it to appear. For example:

    %TextEntry%

By the way,  if a course uses multiple text-entry variables, it'll definitely help to give them more meaningful names. You can rename the variables as desired by going into the Variables windows:
