Power Point import

Hi, I am brand new to Articulate 360.  As I begin this journey, I have a question about importing a pre-existing power point into storyline.  Is there a way to import and have storyline automatically convert the power point into a new theme, such as Vigor?  I see, that you can adjust the color theme, but I want to convert the whole layout to Vigor.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have lots of power points that I would like to convert, but I am wondering if I have to rebuild each one manually into the theme thats available in the content library?

  • Hi MRogers1!

    Welcome to Articulate 360!

When you import a PowerPoint presentation into Storyline, it brings in your existing slides, layouts, and formatting, but it won’t automatically apply a new Content Library 360 theme (like Vigor) to those imported slides. To use a theme such as Vigor, you’d need to apply its layouts and design elements manually after importing.

However, I do see the value of being able to convert the theme automatically upon import, so I’ve submitted a feature request to our Product team so that they can consider adding that in a future update.

We welcome your ideas, and you can always submit your feature requests to our developers directly!

Our customers drive our product roadmap, and your suggestions really do make a difference!

  • MRogers1: As I understand it, you want to import PPT slides and have them automatically transfer to another look, such as the Vigor theme. I don't know of any way to do that.

When you import slides from a PPT, from another Storyline project, or from the Content library, Storyline automatically imports the corresponding Slide Master(s).

When you have more than one Slide Master in a file, you can apply any layout from any Slide Master to any slide.

However, unless the slide has the same elements as the applied layout, you'll still have to make manual adjustments.

For example, if the slide has a Title placeholder and a Content placeholder, it's easy to apply another layout that also has those elements. But if there's not a 1-to-1 match, weird things can happen, and it could be a lot of work to fix the slide.

In other words, chances are you will need to make manual adjustments.

I think the easiest way to get what you want is to redo the Slide Masters in the PPT before you import the slides. I'd also then delete the original Slide Master from the Storyline line to avoid confusion when you're applying layouts.

Another option would be to edit the existing Slide Master in Storyline so it looks like what you want, and so it includes the same basic layouts as your PPT. Then import the PPT slides, and apply the layouts with the desired design.

Thank you Judy, I will look into adjusting the slide masters before importing.  I am thinking that it may be easier just to rebuild in a sense, as there may be more to fix and additional frustration when the weird things happen.  :)  Going forward now that I have articulate, every build will be using the articulate, just the retro fitting will be a little time consuming.

  • I love the advice ChristaNovel637 gave you. It's good. I will add to this some issues I have seen. I normally will start a new presentation. Then make sure my slide size is the same as my PPT, if not you can go crazy reformatting everything. Once they are the same and any other changes are made to slide formatting, I do the import. Most of the time it slides right in.

Hope this helps make your life a little easier.

Thank you, as I have seen the videos about the resizing and the challenges developers have with that if not set from the beginning.  So far, I do not see much of a bonus of importing a PPT unless I want to keep the original theme and not try to change it to one of the Themes in the content library.  As a new shiny toy for me, I like the different themes available in the content library and only wish that storyline or its AI could somewhat automatically convert and existing PPT into one of the new theme layouts as a starting point.

  • I'm going to say a giant, "yes, but..." See this screenshot for how you import PPs:

That said, at that point you're simply developing without designing. Simply adding clickable areas and next buttons doesn't lead to learning. I always recommend building directly in Storyline after creating a design that incorporates skill building activities. Source documents like PPs are usually focused on information transfer rather than practice activities and skill building.

I see huge potential in articulate to help me move from archaic PPT training materials to interactive skills building courses.  I understand the basics of importing of a PPT, I was just hoping and maybe wishful thinking, if storyline or its AI assistance could change the imported PPT into the Vigor theme automatically.  I see the content library with all of the different layout slides - I am just wondering if I need to just use the original PPT as the reference, start a new project and rebuild each slide in the theme/layout that I want.
