Renaming exported caption files?

My question for Articulate is regarding the exported caption files for translation.

Can you rename those exported .vtt files or will SL not recognize them when you go to import?  I'm assuming it wont, but haven't tested it.

My question for other users that are doing a lot of translation - what process do you use either in the design or the translation to make translations easier and more efficient?

  • I'm exporting the XLIFF to translate the text on the slides and speaker notes.   (I don't often put all the text for all layers in the speaker notes, should I?  Would that make translation it easier?)
  • I'm generating TTS and Captions, then exporting the Captions, to .vtt files and having those translated.
    • The exported .vtt files have coded names which makes it difficult to tell which one goes with which slide/layer, so I created an excel tracker where I copy/paste the name of each file as I'm exporting it, next to the slide number.  This has saved me a lot of headaches when importing the translated files, but it would be much easier if I could just rename the vtt files.  (or be able to export all the captions as once, into one document with time stamps).
  • Then when I go to import the translated VTT files, I copy/paste the translated text form the .vtt file into the TTS area, remove all the time stamping, line up the sentences correctly (which when you don't speak the language can be challenging), change the language and voice selection, update TTS.  Then...
  • I go in and import the translated .vtt file and edit the captions to align with the TTS.

It just seems like there should be a better way?   Is anyone else doing something different that makes the process easier and more efficient?

  • Hello Kelli,

    Happy to help!

Renaming the exported .vtt file is safe as long as you don't change the extension. Changing the .vtt file extension to something else might cause issues when you re-import the captions back to Storyline 360.

I'll leave your other question for community input!
