Renumber Slides

Content was added to a Storyline 360 course and slides were rearranged to enhance experience. Now the number on the slides does not flow. 3.2 to 3.4 to 3.7 and so on. The slides are not auto renumbering.

Am I missing something?

No I'm talking about my storyview not updating the numbers. I know I can tell the menu what I want to do.

  • Oh, thanks for clarifying the issue.

Do the slides have triggers that jump to "next slide," or do they jump to specific slides (e.g., "jump to slide 3.7")?

Storyview does its best to display the layout based on how slides are connected. That can impact whether the slides appear in numerical order for a linear set of slides.

If that's not the issue, you could try the usual steps that support suggests: Quit Storyline and relaunch the course. Be sure you're working on your local drive. Beyond that, I suggest you contact support directly.

I have it directed to specific slides because I'm worried it will go to 3.2-3.3 and skip everything in between. I was hoping closing and reopening would fix it. But it's been like this since yesterday.

Sometimes, if you drag and drop the misnumbered slide to its current place (I know that sounds weird) but make sure you see an arrow below the previous slide and the previous slide selected, it will update the numbering after you drop it into place. Hopefully you can see my .gif of the arrow I'm referring to here:

Since you've set the triggers to jump to specific slides, this may get a little hairy. You may need to first set slide 3.8's "next" trigger back to simply "next slide" and slide 3.3's previous trigger to simply "previous slide," drag it in place, and then boom, it should renumber automatically.

The slides are numbered in the order they are created. They flow based on how they are connected using either Player or Object triggers and will not be automatically renumbered if they link to a slide other than the next slide. If you want to change them to numerical order, you’ll need to manually adjust the slide numbers by moving them up or down, then update the triggers to point to the next slide.

  • I am having the same issue. I have tried to drag the slide on top of the previous slide in story view and in the individual scenes and it is still showing the slides out of numerical order. I even tried to reset my master slide and that did not correct the problem. Any other suggestions?

      Hi jennifer-coady!

Sorry to hear you're struggling with reordering Slides in Storyline!

It would be easier to offer solutions if we could see the .story file you've been working with. Do you mind uploading a copy here in the discussion or privately through a support case?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

This is what I see when I open your file. It looks like all the slides are stacked in numerical order, unless you're trying to establish a different sequence. Moreover, I was able to establish an order by dragging the slides up or down to change their numerical sequence.

  • The issue I have encountered has to do with the slide number on each slide. It is in the bottom right of each slide. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this without manually adding each slide number when I am finished developing the course?

Thank you for the clarification. The slide numbering is automatic and controlled by built-in project variables such as Menu.SlideNumber and Menu.TotalSlides, which are referenced in the master slide.

Currently, your project contains 16 slides in total:

      • Scene 1 has 5 slides
      • Scene 2 has 11 slides

By default, the automatic numbering counts all slides sequentially from 1 to 16.

If you'd like to reset the numbering per scene (e.g., so that Scene 2 starts from 1 with a total of 11 pages), you’ll need to modify the master slide and reference the scene-level variables:

      • Scene.SlideNumber (for the current slide within the scene)
      • Scene.TotalSlides (for the total slides in the scene)
