Reorder & renumber scenes

Hi, I have inherited a story that I am updating. I need to reorder the scenes whcih I have managed to do by altering which slides jump-to which slides, but the scene number hasn't reshuffled and I can't see how to change this.

Am I missing something simple?

  • Hi Sherri,

you can cut (strg+x) and paste (strg+v) your scenes to reorganise them. Just cut out the scene you want to move in your story view, click on the scene after which it should appear and insert it again. I would collaps all scenes so it´s easier for you if you have many scenes. You can also set any scene as the starting scene by rightclicking on a scene > start scene.

Also if you insert or reorganise slides in an existing project you might have to reset the menu in the player. Sometimes it doesn´t insert the newly created slides at the right place.

    Greetings,

    Susi

is "strg" the same as "control"?  I assume so? I've never heard of "strg"!

It doesn't work for me. When I move to the scene I want it next to and paste it. The scene jumps right back to where it was. What am I doning wrong?

Hi, I have the same issue and it is not that simple: the sections are numbered in the order they were created but I am not able to renumber them in the sequence they appear in the storyline. For example, Scene 1, Scene 22, Scene 18, Scene 2, Scene 3, etc., should be Scene 1, Scene 2, Scene 3 but I have no control over the number that is assigned to the Scene. Any advice on that?

I have the same issue. In Story View I was able to move the scene to the right place but the slides maintain their original numbers. Resetting menu shows the new order but, again, original numbers.

        Hi Ellen,

        Thank you for reaching out!

That doesn't sound quite right! Let's see if we can pinpoint what is causing this.

A couple of questions for you on this:

        • What happens when you do rearrange your slides from Story View? Are the Slide numbers updating accordingly?
        • Are there specific navigational triggers on your slides?

At the moment, this is currently what I am showing: Video for Rearranging Slides

        Please keep us posted!

I decided to create a course instruction scene as Scene 1. Had the same problem as everyone else. In Player mode, you should be able to reorder your scenes there, but it doesn't work. My new intro Scene was Scene 6 at the bottom and I couldn't move it up to number one.

This is what worked. I selected all my scenes and hit Control-X to cut and remove them. That left my Intro Scene 6 as Scene 1. Then I selected the new Scene 1 and pasted all my scenes back using Control-V. Now everything is numbered properly.

Storyline should make it much easier and allow us to do it Story View by simply moving the scene into its desired location with the option to renumber all the scenes and slides.

They should at least allow using the Player Menu window to work. Just like Tab order etc..

I hope this helps some people.

      Hi Linda,

I am using S360 and the cut/paste worked like a charm in Story View actually!  And it renumbered everything for me too!

  • Glad to hear that you were able to find what you needed here, Tony.

    Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

  • Hi Eric

Thanks for reaching out and sharing that you're running into difficulty with the method Susi shared above.

This is similar to the recommendation that we share in the following article:

How to Change the Order of Scenes in Story View

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

  • Not sure how to control the cut/paste action, but I think it should be much easier by simply being able to renumber the scenes to reorder things.
