Storyline Course for Portfolio: Requesting Feedback

Hi, everyone:

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I'm working on my first Storyline course. Could I please get some feedback? :)

Also: Could you let me know if you think this is worth adding to a portfolio to prove basic competency with Storyline (that was my end goal)? I'm worried about it having an opposite effect: i.e. Employers think I'm not super proficient with the tool because the course is so simple/basic...

Maybe I can add something to take this to a higher level (not sure what that would be atm), but will wait to hear what everyone's comments are before pouring more time into this.

Many thanks!

  • Hi Harmeet, it doesn't look like we can access the link. Why not publish to Review360, that way the link is public.

  • Hi! Is the link still not working? I made some updates last night so you may have tried when I was re-publishing.

  • Hi Harmeet, I think it demonstrates basic skills. I would work on getting the course as intuitive as possible and maybe look at some of the styling on the radio buttons (hover state makes the text very difficult to read) and the menu page (different length button looks odd).

Also, be careful with the speed of animations as they can sometimes be frustrating to wait for to complete, especially when not synchronised with audio.

I think the main menu needs some work in terms of how intuitive it is, as I was clicking buttons on this and not knowing what should/shouldn't work. Only buttons 3 and 5 are functional, and this is not obvious. I think the others should either go to a dummy page or be disabled (visually and using the disabled state). The location of the message "Only lesson 2 is active" isn't in a place where the eye naturally goes to for information.

It's a very basic course, but maybe this is a good representation of where your skills are currently at.

Personally, I would only show on request, and wait until you have some real courses under your belt to display on your portfolio, or work on some slides that show some more interesting interactions to demonstrate your skills. There are some good examples and the templates are free to download. Maybe you could download one and customise to a different style with different content and incorporate into this module you have developed.

Good luck with upskilling. There's plenty of resources on the Heroes site to stretch your skills and add something special to your folio piece.

Hi, Sam. This is such detailed feedback--thank you for taking the time to provide it!

I made updates to address the issues you noted. This includes adjusting the hover states on those buttons, updating the Menu page, and cutting down the time on animations.

This is definitely a good representation of where my skills are at since I'm still learning. I'm going to be switching gears to finishing my portfolio site and then will circle back on this. Downloading and modifying a template seems like it would be quite beneficial + an easier win.

Thank you for the helpful advice. :)
