Storyline Cropping Image Issues

Hi there, I was hoping in getting some help with a bug I have encountered.

I currently am using a workaround for this bug but is a time consuming workaround and would appreciate if there was a fix for this.

I have a static image as a background with subjects that will be used as hazard perception. Those subjects have also been exported transparent and added on top of the background image for creating a fancy hover state for each when the user is looking for those hazards. In order for me to align perfectly the subjects on the background with these new transparent images, I had to export them at the same size as the background. This created a lot of empty space that I had to crop in Storyline in order for the hover state to work properly. Now this is were I have my problem. Whenever I crop an image (after coming out of the 'crop' function), instead of it staying exactly in place but cropped, it moves slightly to the left or slightly to the right or even scales up/down. It is unpredictable on how the crop will end up or what causes it. I think this is a bug, surely the image should have stayed locked in place after cropping.

I am adding below how is supposed to look like with my workaround and then how Storyline is acting after using the crop function.

PS: I found that if I get really close to the subject while cropping the transparent image, it behaves a bit better but still with a slight jump.

  • Hi KatiaKiouloglou

Sorry to hear you've run into this setback, when cropping images in Storyline!

Using a sample PNG with a transparent background, I tested the Crop feature but the image remained in place after making my edits. Do you mind testing with the attached image file I used, to help isolate the issue?

If the behavior is local to the image files you're using, do you mind sharing a copy of those files along with your Storyline project so we can take a closer look? Feel free to upload those items here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

      Hi StevenBenassi

After a few more tests I think I found out what is the issue with the crop on Storyline. When the image is cropped using — Right click (on the image) -> Size and Position -> Crop From — the image stays in place but by using — Format (Picture tools) -> Crop (tool) — and manually try to crop it, it jumps and shifts position ever so slightly. I suspect that the actual Crop tool under the Format (Picture tools) is experiencing some kind of bug.

        Hi KatiaKiouloglou,

Thanks so much for following up with your findings!

Are you comfortable sharing your file so our Support Engineers can take a closer look on our end? You can share it here or privately in a support case, and we'll delete it from out systems once troubleshooting is complete.
