Storyline File Corrupt and Will Not Open
Hello,
I was working in Articulate Storyline 2 when I saved my .Story file, then published it. After publishing it, I went to re-save it, and the file would no longer save. I attempted to click "Save As" and save it under a new name, but that also would not work.
I exited the program, knowing that I had saved my latest changes before publishing it and assuming it would be fine, but when I attempted to open the file again, I get the attached error message and my file won't open.
Do you have any suggestions for how to resolve this?

Hi, Sara -- So sorry for your difficulties! Please review this information, and you may find improvement if you run through the repair steps listed in #2. Also, this thread in a similar topic could be useful, as there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files, and the steps you will need to follow are listed by my colleague, Ashley.

These steps did not help me. Sometimes importing to a new file helps but not this time. I have lost a significant amount of work and feel like having a heart attach right now.
I should note it's also telling me it can't open b/c it may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline. So, here's the thing. I started this file 4 days ago and have NOT made an version changes since then.

Interesting about the version notification that you're mentioning here. What version of Storyline are you utilizing? Have you downloaded a trial perhaps recently, as those are not reverse compatible.
I do not have any magic powers, but if you would like to share the .story file for me to try to open, you are welcome to do so.
I also have the "This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline." message. I tried opening two other files on my hard drive with the same message. They all worked about three weeks ago. Just tried uninstalling and reinstalling Storyline 2 no joy. Tried installing the SL3 demo, same message.

Sorry to hear that you ran into an error message as well.
Where were the files created? Can you share one of the .story files for me to take a look and see if I can open?
This is really a problem, your software is buggy and this issue needs to be addressed beyond this chat. Is there a fix that can be downloaded and installed, this is a massive waste of time.

Thanks for reaching out and sharing that you are experiencing a similar issue.
Are you working on your local drive with your software, project files, and assets? File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. Common causes are environmental (disk errors, power outages, improper shutdowns), viruses, failed Windows updates, and even file size (i.e., very large files have a higher risk of corrupting). Consider using the preventative measures described in this article to protect your project files.
There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:
- Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
- Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
- Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
- Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
