COVID-19 Training Examples #274: Challenge | Recap

Seven years ago, we started the e-learning challenges to help course designers practice and develop their skills while also building an e-learning portfolio.

Though the challenges are always practical and based on core e-learning skills (even this one), they aren’t usually tied to specific causes or real-world topics.

I think the last topic-specific challenge we did was during the Ebola virus outbreak. The examples you shared were amazing and helped educate all of us on a difficult topic.

With COVID-19, we have another opportunity to help others learn about this virus, how it spreads, and how to stay safe.

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to build a short demo or interaction around the coronavirus disease. You don’t have to create a full course. Instead, focus on something short and quick to address one area of the virus.

Here are a few topic ideas to get you started:

Thanks Esther, everything is on one slide. The text input field is on the base slide. There is a base slide and nine layers. Eight layers have answers to some common questions about COVID-19. The ninth layer is a catch-all if the code I created could not interpret the question being asked. I created a variable to capture all the words the user types in the text field and when the text field loses focus a JavaScript trigger runs. In the JavaScript, I created eight arrays (one for each question). These arrays contain keywords related to the question. When the JavaScript runs it compares the typed text stored in the variable to each of the arrays. If a keyword is found it sets a variable for the array to true. Then in Storyline I have triggers that say if such and such variable is true ... Expand

I tuned in for this week's webinar on working in Rise (which was great by the way :-)) and wanted to try out some of the tips I saw. The graphics were mostly taken from Adobe Stock and edited to fit my needs using Adobe Illustrator.

Very clean design, and your quiz match card questions do a good job of making sure the learner pays attention and thinks about the symptoms that different illnesses have

Working from home? Too tired and busy to disinfect your workspace? Not a problem, because I have a module I'd like to share where I show everybody how to disinfect your desk, computer, monitors, mouse and even your speakers....with only one hand! Coronavirus or no, this is a good way to practice hygiene when you're working from home or when you're going back to work in your company headquarters. Make sure you wash your hands right after doing this trick - Paul Alders has a good module on hand-washing that's also COVID-agnostic

This was fun! I like how you had germs placed in various locations to give something for people to interact with. I might play with adapting that concept in a future learning project.

COVID-19 - Saudi Aramco Training & Development and John Hopkins Aramco Healthcare I would like to emphasize that all content, both Arabic and English, was a team effort, with two other developers and our QA/voice over specialist, all from our T&D Unit. My team at Grasp Development created an eLearning course on how to stay safe by avoiding COVID-19 at the office and at home. It provides an introduction to viruses, safety precautions, defining terms used in the media such as: social distancing, self-monitoring, isolation, and more. It also covers dealing with COVID-19 on a daily basis (how to talk to children about it, limiting non-trusted new sources, what to do if you experience symptoms, etc) as well hand washing techniques and mask etiquette. Hey, all! This is really my first time using Storyline 360. I wanted to try something similar to something else I saw here; creating a PDF infographic. I had to publish as a Word file, but I realized that it simply displayed the infographic on a Word doc page. So, it isn't a "true" PDF. I will be uploading as a .jpeg file. Anyway, I was hoping to get some feedback. Short and sweet! :-) Overall very clear and easily digested infographic. My suggestion would be to possible change the myth (red X) and fact (thumb up) icons to be more directly complimentary. For example, a thumbs up and a thumbs down, or a green check with the red x. Keep going, I look forward to more creations!

This is really cute. I love the graphics. The only suggestions I would make is that you disable the menu at the side and turn off the other player settings that you are not using (resources, sound icon). This will give the presentation a cleaner look. You can turn these off via the Player Tab under the Publish settings.
