Articulate 360 and VR

Hi - Im just really here for some advice from you sage people really :)

This might be a bit of a weird question, as Im just beginning to look at incorporating VR elements into our eLearning. 

I have Articulate 360 and I am considering producing 360 videos and possibly some AR stuff for a project Im about to start.

It will be all hosted on an LMS, but Im unsure about how Storyline connects/works alongside any 360 video element.

Does VR / 360 video require a separate player?  If the course is built in Storyline, but includes separate VR elements - how do these work together? Can they work together?

If that all sounds a bit vague Im sorry, Im just trying to piece out how these things pair up, as the project ideally should have lots of interesting aspects to it.

It sounds like you have video and audio files you'd like to incorporate into Storyline content, is that correct? Can you tell me more about what you were envisioning?

Storyline 360 seamlessly imports video and audio files; if you'll give me an idea of what you're looking to do, I can point you in the right direction!

I'm actually at scoping stage. I want to use Storyline for the bulk of the work. However I was thinking about incorporating some fancy stuff - like 360 video and VR elements - but Im unsure how all of this would work together as one eLearning module. How would the different bits talk to each other? Would the 360 video and VR stuff need to sit outside (separate) from the storyline stuff?

I'd like to do AR - most of our target audience are given work phones to use so they could use these to view content. 

VR - this is trickier as our target audience probably don't have access to a headset/google cardboard as part of their L&D.

I guess it's more for my own knowledge really - to understand how if it was something we wanted to do, how the tech could be brought together. Does that make sense?

Hi Tamsin,

I am researching this as well.  For true VR, it will need to be a separate app to be used properly.  Articulate does not support VR in any of their products.  

Your question is what I am working around as well.  After all, VR is cool but it needs to serve a purpose.  And that purpose is to offer interaction and, most importantly, tracking.  So if we have a VR scene of room and the student must navigate the room and click on all the red boxes, how does Storyline know they completed the task?  And how do we let the user know the task was completed properly? 

Through Javascript, we can talk to storyline and pass variables or adjust variables.  So I think this is the way to go.  But I'm still not sure how.  

At this point, there does not seem to be an easy answer when it comes to VR and Articulate.  

BTW, I suggest looking at InstaVR for simple app creation and Unity for more complex and robust VR creation.

Here is a beta concept currently being worked on:

Using any popular eLearning Development Tool for example Storyline you can hard code a variable “XD231D” If success code is correct permit the participant to continue.

The VR App final screen will need to display the same code. 

This method can avoid the requirement of using a Learning Records Store.

Great question, and it's come up a few times prior in the E-Learning Heroes community. Storyline doesn't create 360 videos, but there are a few examples in this discussion and this other one on how folks have added them into their courses. 

We don't have anything on our Coming Soon section of the “What’s New” page for Articulate 360, but we'd love to know more about what you're looking for in a 360/Virtual reality video. Can you share details with our product team as a feature request?

Hi all  -Am new to Storyline and first time poster! 

I'm looking at the 360 space as well.

I've managed to embed a web object after building a short 360 tour in Marzipano. Have a look at http://juliandavis.com/adding-360-ar-to-storyline-360/

You can also look at H5P (http://h5p.org) for embedding 360 video via their interactive video. This works with YouTube or your own videos.

There's a few options out there, but would love to see something in Storyline to support what is now becoming a must have in some L&D teams.

i am sure someone will have tried/succeeded with the following approach:-

storyline (all versions but particularly 3 for me) supports JavaScript and iFrames so developing something with three.js, ar.js and Awe.js or combinations of two or more would provide an interface to AR from within Storyline?

use and object within the story to launch the iFrame with the url of the AR as the target

if i’m missing or overlooking something please comment as I’d appreciate more specialist guidance

a working demo of the above - or shooting the idea down - would be helpful, so no one goes down a dead end based on my assumption!

Hi everyone,

I have been using Seekbeak to create 360 experiences and it works well when embedding as a web object in Sotryline. Seekbeak is great because there is the ability to add interactivity to 360 images and they have a solid analytics section that enables you to pull data.  Here is a quick sample I did for a recent challenge on web objects.

The guys at H5P have just released their 360 Virtual Tour content type. This content type can be embedded as a web object into your Storyline project easily. The benefit of embedding and it being hosted on another server is that changing the H5P content will be updated without the need to update and republish the Storyline file.
