Flash alternative

Can you recommend any file format to use for animations that will play independently of the slide like flash files? Is there any format besides .swf that supports this functionality?

Our company is moving away from using flash because our LMS no longer supports flash. Good thing is that Storyline allows you to convert to HTML5 format for the output file. But our concern is for newly developed courses - we need a good alternative that's compatible with Storyline that allows you to run independently and isn't controlled by the timeline.
