My objects flicker when changing states

May 15, 2020

So my gifs, or pngs or any custom buttons that I have, keep flickering when the states change. While previewing within storyline it is less but when previewing on chrome it's quite noticeable. And, it's even worse when I upload it on Scorm Cloud. PLEASE HELP ME.

Hi there, Bhayesh!

What you're describing sounds like an open issue in Storyline 360. Here's what we uncovered so far:

  • Behavior: If a PNG image has states, it will flicker when hovering over it in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox

If that's not right, are you comfortable with sharing the file for testing? You can send it privately to our Engineers by using this secure link. We'll check it out and delete it after!

Thanks for sharing your project file so that I could take a look, Bhayesh.

I'm seeing the same behavior, and even with a bit of testing, I'm getting the same result.

I've opened up a support case on your behalf so that you can work directly with one of our support engineers to dive in and understand what's going on. I'll be following along and you should get an e-mail from them soon.

Hi Bhayesh,

Thank you for letting me know. Do you mean that you are not getting e-mails from our support team or you are not able to get into your e-mail client at all?

Either way, here's Lejan's response to you:

Hi Bhayesh,

I tested your project and I was able to replicate the problem. After looking into this further, I found out that the flickering issue when an object changes its state is a known bug that was already reported to our engineers. This behavior appears to be happening on any objects that transition from one state to another.

We want to apologize for any inconvenience this problem has caused you and rest assured that we'll do our best to get this resolved. We'll keep you posted on any updates we'll have regarding this.

I'm attaching this conversation to the report as well, Bhayesh.

Hi I had a similar problem. Its good to hear that the engineers are aware of this problem and are actively working on it. Gives me hope. I have made a huge game using articulate but the only problem is the flickering one. Can you tell me by when can we expect an update which will resolve this bug?

Katie Riggio

Hi Pramod,

Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry that you are facing some flickering.

It is currently in the early stages of review based on our How We Tackle Bugs article. To help you plan, it's unlikely to be fixed in the next few updates.

As we continue to investigate, would you be willing to share your course file with us? We're happy to offer more tailored support. If that works for you, please use this private upload link!

Hi, Bhayesh and Pramod.

We appreciate your patience while our team investigated this.

I am happy to share some great news! We fixed the issue you reported where:
HTML: PNGs reload (disappear and appear or blinks) when there are states in it and you mouse hover them in Safari for Mac, Goggle Chrome and Firefox.

Be sure to install the latest Storyline 360 update (Build 3.49.24347.0) to take advantage of all the recent features and fixes.

If the problem happens again, please let us know, or you can always work directly with our support engineers here.

I'm currently having this issue with a .png to .gif state character and gif to gif state character.

The first character's normal state is a png. When the user selects a certain point on the screen, the character moves along a motion path towards that point and switches states to a gif. When the character moves along the motion path, it often disappears for a whole second or more while viewing in Chrome.

The same issue happens with the second gif-to-gif character.

Has anyone else noted this issue resurfacing? Is anything being done to fix it?

Hi Clint,

Sorry to hear that you ran into similar behavior.

We are currently tracking a known issue that causes objects to flicker when the state changes. Would you be willing to share your project file here or privately through a support case so we can verify if you are being affected by this bug? We'll delete it as soon as we're done testing!

Hi Lynn!

So sorry to hear you've run into similar behavior!

Our team is actively monitoring a known issue that causes objects to flicker when the state changes. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here in the discussion or privately through a support case so we can confirm if you are being affected by the same bug?

We'll delete it from our system as soon as we're finished!

Unfortunately I've already deleted the offending slide and reconfigured the sequence a different way. The object that was giving me trouble had five different states that changed rapidly (around .25 seconds for each state), and the flicker was happening when changing from the 4th to 5th state. Don't know if that helps. Thank you for looking into this!

Steven Benassi

Hi Lynn!

Thanks for the feedback! No worries about not having the file to share!

Based on the steps you described, (in Storyline 360 ver 3.79.30834.0 via Windows Parallels on a Mac M1) I tried to replicate the issue in a new file but was unable to detect any flickering between state changes.

State Flicker Test

Would you mind taking a look at the sample file I've attached and letting us know how it differs from yours? This can help us narrow down the cause of the flickering you encountered.

Thank you! Looking forward to hearing from you!

Steven Benassi

Hi Lynn!

Thanks for following up!

Testing that sample file again (in Storyline 360 ver 3.79.30834.0 via Windows Parallels on a Mac M1) using the Classic Player I was still unable to detect any flickering between state changes.

To clarify, were you working locally or from a network drive when you ran into the flickering behavior? We recommend you Create, Edit, and Publish Courses on Your Local Hard Drive while authoring in order to avoid erratic behavior.

If you were working locally, I'd recommend performing a repair of your Storyline application the next time you run into this issue to see if that addresses the behavior.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!
