SL2 - Selecting the Volume Control Freezes the Control and Mutes the Audio

Dec 10, 2018

With Chrome's October 2018 Autoplay Policy, we found that when our learners selected Storyline's player bar volume control (published to HTML5), the thumb control dropped to the bottom of the slider track and became static, and the audio stopped playing. The only way to get the audio back was to restart the SCORM file. We tested this in SCORM Cloud and got the same results.

Having 600+ .story files published in our LMS, we submitted a case to Articulate for help.

Articulate's technical support reviewed our file and determined that this behavior occurs when the .story Player Size IS NOT set to "Lock player at optimal size."

For those of you who are also caught in this situation, Articulate's solution for us was one of the following:

  1. Remove the volume control from each of our 600 courses and republish.
  2. Change the Player Size setting to "Lock player at optimal size" for each of our 600 courses and republish.
  3. Upgrade to Storyline 3 (which does not cause the slider to stick and the audio to mute) and republish each of our 600 courses.

Articulate has been kind enough to initiate Feature Request 01619996 for bug SL2-6102 as follows:

Two feature requests:

1. A bulk editor that will allow you to make changes to the player settings of published content to disable the volume controls.

2. A bulk updater to convert SL2 files to SL3 and auto-publish based on default settings.

If anyone has any other solution suggestions to help us avoid touching over 600 .story files, please chime in!

Otherwise, if you're experiencing the same issue, please let Articulate know as they prioritize feature requests based on the value and the amount of customers who are impacted. Thank you!
