Split Path in one assessment

Feb 24, 2022

Hello,

I've searched in this community, but can't seem to find the answers to this specific scenario that I'm experiencing. I have an assessment that actually covers 3 pieces of equipment. I've determined which questions are common to all and which are equipment-specific. What I'd like to know is this - would you create a branching slide to 3 different paths within the same scene (with 3 different result slides) or branching to 3 different scenes (with 3 different result slides)? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to either method? The result slide (from one of the 3 paths) will then be communicated to an LMS. Any input is appreciated!

Yes, it is possible. The way I set mine up was for 2 programs, a primary program and secondary program. Both programs shared the first 5 modules and the 8th and 9th module. Modules 6 and 7 were for the primary program only.

Each of the modules in the course had a corresponding Quiz bank (QB-1, QB-2, QB-3, and so on) in the assessment. I put the first 5 quiz banks into Scene 1, Quiz Banks 6 and 7 into Scene 2, and Quiz Banks 8 and 9 into Scene 3. In the title slide in Scene 1, I set a variable txtCoursePath to either PRI or SEC.

At the bottom of Scene 1, I inserted a slide which has 2 triggers on it, which execute when the timeline begins. If txtCoursePath is PRI, then go to Scene 2. If txtCoursePath is SEC, then go to Scene 3. At the end of Scene 2, the navigation is set to jump to Scene 3.

On the results slide for the assessment, be sure all of the quiz banks are selected and be sure to check the "Only score viewed questions" checkbox in the lower-right. That way, you can use 1 results slide to communicate score back to the LMS, based on the slides the learner viewed, not the entire set.

Thanks for your speedy reply, Joseph. The way my course is built is with 25 common questions all students answer and then the student will choose one of the three paths, according to their job. with additional questions. So they'd only progress and complete one of the three paths. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about variable to truly understand your process. I'll have to do a little research. Also, when I look at my results slide, I don't see an option like the one you mention "Only score viewed questions." I'll have to dig a little deeper, I suspect. Thanks!

Hi, Mona.

I'm glad Joseph is offering you some suggestions for your branching scenario! You mentioned you wanted to learn about variables, so I wanted to share some resources:

You also asked about the option to only score viewed questions. On your Results slide, go to Design > Quiz settings on the ribbon, and you'll see the option:

I hope this helps!

Thank you both! I have made considerable progress on this course from your replies. One thing I have noticed has to do with each of the results slide. I have two buttons - one to review the knowledge assessment and one to retry. If they review, it takes the student back through all the assessment questions showing them which ones were correct and which ones were incorrect (trigger is review results and show correct/incorrect responses when reviewing). If they retry, the trigger is reset results slide. However, if I set the assessment questions to reset to initial state when revisiting, then they can't see their responses when reviewing. If I leave it as automatically decide or resume saved state, the answers or drag/drops are prepopulated and the student can't change them in their retry attempt. Any suggestions?

Hi, Mona.

The questions should be set to "Resume saved state" or "Automatically decide", which is the default, if you want the user to review their answers. As you mentioned, setting them to "Reset to initial state" erases the user's response when revisiting the slide.

This option shouldn't affect the Retry button, as the trigger to reset the results will clear the initial responses. See below:

If this is not what you're experiencing, I'm happy to take a look at the .story file to help you troubleshoot.

Thanks! I did make sure all slides are set to "Automatically decide." The problem I'm experiencing is that when I preview the course and use the Retry feature, it still keeps my answers and does not allow me to adjust. It is behaving as if I'm reviewing; however does not display the correct/incorrect message. The only thing I can do to advance through the slides is to click Submit, even though I cannot edit the responses. The other issues I potentially see is that in the common set of slides, they are all pointing to one result slide on the slide properties, even though there are multiple options.

I read in one of the community articles that you need one master slide to report the results to an LMS. I was going to create a new scene and have all results report there. I tried adding a master result slide, which deleted all the success/failure calculation triggers on all result slides. I ended up having to keep it in one of the paths, and set up a trigger to jump to next slide (the 2nd result slide) when the timeline started on the 1st result slide. I never did set up a master results slide.

My content is proprietary, so I cannot share in this venue. I really wish I could because these errors are very frustrating. I'm sure there is a way to fix it, but I can't figure it out.
