Best practices for designing and developing for mobile - what have you learned?

Would you be willing to share your lessons learned and best practices for mobile, primarily phones? Would you develop a different course for large mobile users that would maximize sleak/fast style or would you develop/design for the combined laptop/desktop/mobile?  Think of field staff, nurses, trouble shooters who want data rather than slick.
